The voices in my head warn me of using passive cooling on my lowly Prescott but I think it might be worth a try with a Northwood if you can get sufficient airflow across it.
Edit: Of course I'm refering to the XP-120, at least that's what the voices are telling me

Frankly, Ralf, I think you've shared too much with us. Let's summarize these little asides... You're either 14 or dyslexic, listen when your neighbor's dog speaks to you, look and dress just like George Clinton, wear an ugly wig to conceal your tinfoil mind-control shield, fire guns, race motorcycles, and listen to vinyl on tubes. Hell, if you didn't live in Socal, people might think you were a bit, well, weird.Ralf Hutter wrote:Hmmm, I don't particularly like the direction this thread is headed in...

Dang, that actually sums it up quite well!HammerSandwich wrote:Frankly, Ralf, I think you've shared too much with us. Let's summarize these little asides... Actually, I've been thinking of moving to Idaho or Washington. Do you think I'd stand out a bit too much? I could always wear a hat.
As for whether and AMD 64 version will be available:
"We are going to make a accessory for A64/A64FX installation, but currently I
am not sure if this part will be available when XP-120 debuts. Please stay
tune on our website since we will update it as often as possible. Thank you
for interesting in Thermalright products."

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned it already, the better this beastie works, the more heat that will have to be evacuated from the case > more airflow needed > more noise potential....it's a vicious circle.....dam I hate circular logic
thinks about going back to water cooling.........Hmmmm.....
Nah, too much hassle.
starts deep thought cycle on case design.......

Um...no.Nowhere_man wrote:Just in case it hasn't been mentioned it already, the better this beastie works, the more heat that will have to be evacuated from the case > more airflow needed > more noise potential....it's a vicious circle.....dam I hate circular logic
Whether you've got the greatest heatsink in the world, or one you found in the bottom of a CrackerJack box, the heat that would have to be evacuated from inside the case is the same.

Globe 120 and AcoustiFan AF120CT, both, are 120s that can run just fine from mainboard header and allow monitoring. They come thermally controlled but are easily modded to fixed-speed by nipping off the thermistor and shorting the two leads together.
I highly recommend the Globe 120; you can get them from MNPCTech.

I agree, that's what I'll be using on my XP-120.Edward Ng wrote:Globe 120 and AcoustiFan AF120CT, both, are 120s that can run just fine from mainboard header and allow monitoring. 'Most 120mm fans with 3pin connectors are the high performance, LOUD type tho.'
theoretically, loud 120mm fans should be less likely to use 3pin connectors.. as they pull more current so more likely to blow the motherboard header.. the quiet ones shouldn't have a problem runnin off headers
anyway, is there annyy chance there is going to be a socket A version of this with clips for people without mounting holes??

Or at least I'd be incredibly surprised.
We've probably seen the last of the new Socket A cooler introductions from the big name companies.
There aren't going to be any hotter Socket A CPU's than there are right now, so there's no market demand for new coolers.
Oh yeah good point.theoretically, loud 120mm fans should be less likely to use 3pin connectors.. as they pull more current so more likely to blow the motherboard header.. the quiet ones shouldn't have a problem runnin off headers
But most of the ones I've seen use either 3pin or are just bare wired. I prefer 3pin because I can connect it to a fan controller which can handle the power and give me the ability to control the noise.
Not true.EvilNick wrote:Most 120mm fans with 3pin connectors are the high performance, LOUD type tho.
I do plan to get this XP-120, probably will get a Tt Thunderblade or Smart Fan to go with it and plug that into the fan controller to quieten it.
The Evercool Aluminiums (at least those sold in Europe, under the "TITAN" name) come with 3-pin connectors and are thermally controlled (or would be, were it not for my fan controller .
There seems to be (and this is just a subjective impression) a lot more 4-pin fans in the US (for whatever reason) - I've yet to run into one...
(Maybe some kind of EU regulation or so? Dunno...)
(Maybe some kind of EU regulation or so? Dunno...)
nope. 4-pin fans are safer anyway.. who knows why there are more 3 pin fans here...
anywayyy that Al evercool fan would be nice on the XP-120... it would act as an extension to the HS

i wouldn't be suprised if you were right, although dissapointed..
'There aren't going to be any hotter Socket A CPU's than there are right now, so there's no market demand for new coolers.'
well lets face it HS's like these are used 90% of the time for overclockers.. and overclocking in the Socket A world is still going strong with the XP-Ms. also silence is gaining in the masses and this offers both.
and some semprons (released mid 2005) will be socket A so i guess there will be new socket A processors.. although they probably wont be hotter.

Preview on Thermalright.com is up
Check out the fan they list as the "stock fan" = Maker: Panaflo (Panasonic)
Model: FBA12G12L1A
Compatability charts and more information will come out when mass production units leave the assembly line.
