Abit CPU temperatures

Post by Denorios » Thu Aug 12, 2004 5:43 am

Does anyone have any idea where the Abit KD7A measures the CPU temperature? I can’t usually stabilise the idle temp much below 50C, even with CPUIdle running and the fans on max. :? Ambient air temp is about 21C. I’ve heard that Abit boards report the CPU Core temp rather than the socket temp, and thus tend to report higher. Is this true? :?:

How are you checking your temps?

I'd only believe what I read in SiS Sandra 2k4, conveniently located here:

I'm measuring the temp with the abit EQ software, which reports exactly the same as the BIOS.

I'd try a third-party software just to make sure that Abit is accurate.

I know from using Abit boards in the past that they are up to 10C higher than in reality.

no matter what software you use, they all use the same source of infomation

yes i've also read where the temp reading is actually a calculated result in abit boards

check for a bios update that may solve the problem for you

i hope i don't have the same problem with my new IC7-G is all i can say

So there isn't a temperature reading device under the CPU?

all i can say is see here http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showt ... did=295191

and here specially about abit cpu temp readings, about a 1/4 way down the page http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showt ... did=218615

and finally here http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showt ... did=293655

yep, i was surprised as well

I'm not a member so I can't look at the threads.

Well anyway, good luck.

Still try Sandra, as it is useful for much more than just accurate CPU readings.

Looks like Abit has caved in to customer pressure. Certain recent Abit bioses for Pentium 4 motherboards sport the following change:
Calibrated CPU temperature.
This gave a drop of about 5C, although my temps still seem rather high compared to some that have been reported here.

Comparison pointless

Post by Denorios » Fri Aug 13, 2004 4:06 pm

The balance of opinion I have found is that Abit boards can report 10C or more higher than others. However, there also seems to be some suggestion that this is the most accurate measurement of the Core temperature any board manufacturer has yet produced. :?

After reading around the subject all over the net, I am fast coming to the conclusion that comparing CPU temperatures between computers is totally pointless, and will remain so until the industry gets round to coming up with a uniform standard for thermistor location, and temperature measurement and reporting. :x

Would it be fair to say that system stability is a more important indicator of heat levels than the thermistor reading?
