How well does your slk947u work? (slk900 too)

Post by jpsa » Sat Sep 18, 2004 1:54 pm

please post your system and temperatures. I'm thinking about
getting one, my system is hard too keep quiet: 2200MHz barton at 1.65volt
I'm currently using speedfan so when idle it's quiet (1000rpm), but when I watch a dvd movie it's enough to kick the fan to about 2000rpm.

I'm using the barton 2500+ inbox heatsink, how much would it improve with the thermalright slk947u?

Did you do a search through the forums for SLK-947U yet?

There's a wealth of information in here already, regarding that sink.

For the short of it, I recommend SLK-900A or SP-97 over SLK-947U, but I seriously suggest looking at what has already been posted to get an understanding as to why I suggest SLK-900A and SP-97 over SLK-947U. There's a reason why there are more often sales on SLK-947U than on SLK-900A or SP-97; namely, as logic would suggest, it does not sell as well. The reason of course, as to why it does not sell as well, is because of the issues with it on Socket A that have been outlined in other posts here in the forums by myself; problems that do not occur with SLK-900A or SP-97 (EDIT: or with SLK-947U when installed to Socket 478).

EDIT2: Btw, the SLK-900U, an older model that has been discontinued, also does not have the same problem as SLK-947U. SLK-900U works just fine, like the SP-97 (the other bolt-mounted SocketA cooler without the floating frame that is the problem for SLK-947U). SLK-900A eschews the bolts all together for Socket lug mounting, and I honestly don't think the weight of SLK-900A is dangerous in any way.

My SLK900 + 8V 92mm L1A Panaflo has been cooling an 82W P4 3.0C for the past year now. It's running in my gaming rig so it gets the most hardcore loading of any of my systems. Max CPU load temp gets up into the high 50°C range after a long gaming session on 90°F+ summer days. I'd guess that, given good case ventilation, a similar setup would work great for you as well.

As above, they are good, but there are small differences between the different models. Have a good read of the posts and the reviews here before you take the plunge.

As for how much a difference will it make. Very hard to say, if everything else is quiet then the difference will be massive. If the other stuff in your case is loud then it will just be a start to the silencing route.
