Fan for XP-120?

Post by ET Awful » Thu Mar 03, 2005 3:09 pm

Okay, I'm no expert on fans, but I know that without mods, I can't get a Nexus to work on the XP-120 due to the closed corners. I'm currently using a Panaflo L1-A at 5v to power the thing, but I know I can do better both with airflow and noise.

I'm not finding anything that really tells me what my best course of action is, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Those Nexus fans are supposed to be really nice, so you'll be in good shape if you mod the corners. There's even a sticky on the subject of modding the fan, I think, and it doesn't look difficult or too time-consuming. Otherwise, I've heard good things about a certain model of Globe brand 120mm fan, which undervolts quite nicely. The XP-120 heatsink review might say which model I'm thinking of.

I, too, was hesitant to mod the closed corners of my Globe 120mm case fan. I decided to just go ahead and do it because I really wanted to use it as an exhaust for my SLK3700BQE. Anyway, I purchased a $5 coping saw at Home Depot and it was a piece of cake to remove the corners. Took all of 10 minutes...

I guess I could pick up a coping saw :). I was thinking Dremel and getting ticked off for the umpteenth time at myself because I lost mine when I moved a while back.

I took a coping saw to my Nexus... ten minutes and a handful of orange dust later, no more corners. ta-da

I didn't bother opening the corners: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewto ... highlight=

I've found a super easy way (and better IMHO) to mount fans (any kind) to the XP-120--use zip-ties. Use the heatpipes as the anchors. It works perfect, and makes for a tighter fit.
