New Scythe stuff (computex)

Pretty hefty looking passive cooler they got here:

Good for OCing a P-M passively? I think it's promising, with a tad of case airflow.

Looks like a passive heatpipe VGA cooler that vents heat outside the case. I proposed this once in a VGA forum, someone else pointed out that Thermaltake has a similar product. But this one looks a lot more substantial.

At first I thought the horizontal fin layout on that GPU cooler was messed up, but it's placed directly behind the case exhaust fan. Should work rather well if I had to guess.

It's a pretty cool design - though I can imagine transporting your box would require some disassembly.

Cooling a P-M that has no IHS with that massive piece of metal is prone to cracking the core i would guess.. argh.

 Whoa, it's like a schooner on crack. If I see correctly, it has 4 heatpipes. I'm sure it'll work great, but it appears to be bending down the card it's attached to.

In reference to the video cooler -

Thermaltake got canned on these forums for having a heatpipe cooler hanging out of the back of the case.

...and it's still a bad idea...

bump it a little and it cracks off, taking the VGA card with it. Though one could probably construct some custom guard around it.

I'm thinking: Why not make a case with these kind of heatpipe heatsinks protruding all the way from top to VGA/PCI output at the back.

The heatsinks would then be connected to the case at several points along the back, making an unfortunate nudge much less unfortunate. Then, if necessary, make a guard for the entire back, to protect it. They could take care of PSU, GPU and CPU.

I know, I know. Too much bother. Well, the only thing wrong with these protruding heatsinks is that they aren't connected at enough points, making them too vulnerable.

It should go higher and cover the whole fan :P
The Scythe looks much heavier than the TT, but I wouldn't want to use either one. I think it would be a lot better it was flatter and used the whole of the exhaust fan - at least you'd have less danger of pressing down on the heatsink and breaking the card!

Oh, yeah. Like Thermaltake doesn't get canned for *anything* they do on these forums. :P

I actually have a Schooner, myself. I do agree with Likif's concerns about external heatpipes being vulnerable. I suspect that if the Schooner is nudged hard enough, the copper heatpipe would probably bend or break before the graphics card itself does. It was just a calculated risk I was willing to take, since I do not move my computer very often. The external heatpipe does work, though.
