Here's the deal:

I have an Athlon XP-Mobile 2600+ @ 2.33GHz ([email protected]) cooled by an Arctic-Cooling Copper Silent 2 Heatsink and an Aerocool 80mm LED fan @ ~1300RPMs controlled by Asus Q-Fan.

It idles @ 43/44ºC and after playing an hour of CS:S it's at around 47ºC (48ºC for any other game like NFS:U 2 etc.)

Athlon XP-Mobile 2600+ @ 2.33GHz ([email protected])
Asus A7V880 VIA KT880
Antec SLK3000B with 120mm @ Low (outtake)
Aerocool AeroPower 450W

How are my temps? Normal, OK, Could be better? Do I really need to buy a new HS/F? I was thinking of the Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu, it's reasonably cheap (30€) and easy to find. All of the Thermalright HS are almost gone except for the SI-97 and that one is too expensive and only for Socket A (I plan to upgrade). BTW I am using the cheap silicone thermal paste that came with the AC cooler.

So... tell me things :D

P.S.: I'll add another Antec TriCool 120mm @ Low as an intake soon.
P.P.S.: How about swapping the fan for a 80mm Nexus?

such a small difference between idle and load temps indicates that you aren't really stressing the CPU with those activities. Try a few minutes of CPUBurn or prime95 and see what happens.

The Zalman CNPS7000 AlCu is a very good cooler, in terms of cost, effectiveness, and quietness. It's likely that you could get lower temps with less noise with the Zalman HS.

your temps are perfectly fine. you really dont need to worry about them until things become unstable, which is an indication that you have cooling issues. personally, with a socket A processor, i'm fine with any temps below 70C (as long as it's stable).

Hello:

What are your case and/or room temps?

The idle seems a bit high (nothing to worry about!) and the load temp seem quite good; even cool. A lot depends on your ambient temps...

MonsterMac: im not trying to argue, but a few minutes ago i read this thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=913874 which deals with the heat/instability "myth" (or so they call it) if your interested read at least the link off the first post. Might give you a new perspective but i have no idea what personal experiance you have.

edit: fixed a mistake i made with mixing it up with another thread

edit: if your not interested this is the conclusion: "But it's proven that the Athlon 64 processors (at the very least the Newcastle 130nm 2800+ parts) are able to take an amazing amount of heat and still run stable, even considerably beyond their maximum operational spec."

Well here is what I got:

IDLE:

CPU: 33C
Amb: 22C

LOAD:
CPU: 35C
Amb: 25C

This was after about half an hour of compiling stuff. And here is what i got:

Athlon XP-Mobile 2400 @ stock (1800mhz=133x13.5, 1.35V)
Thermalrigh SI-97 with AC5 and a no-name 2000RPM 80mm fan.

I would guess that your temps are ok, since mine actually puts out 35W and I believe yours is 45W, plus my fan runs faster, also the heatsink performance is a factor. Try and find somebody or a few people, that will lend you a heatsink and test it out, might be that the CPU is just hot no matter what you do to it.

Yes, mine has a TDP of 45W. I don't know my case and ambient temperatures! My motherboard is at 34/35ºC. I can only guess the ambient temperature, between 20-25ºC (my room is usually colder than outside, and it was hot outside >30º)

I have an Aerocool HT-101 here. Last time I had it installed (Soltek KT-600, Athlon XP2400+ and this fan @ 5V) my temps were ~50/52ºC idle. :?

I am using Thermalright SI-97 on a Barton 3200+ on an asus Nforce2 board
my temps are
mobo 32c
cpu 43c at idle
mobo 33c
CPU 54c at load (prime 95 for 60 mins)
Room temp at time of test was 26c
In our AU. summer with room temps in the low 40s the load temp actually hit 69c
So I believe you have quite a bit of headroom
CPU fan at the time of testing is a 1500 rpm Delta sleeve bearing fan I am testing and so far it appears very good but it does have closed corners , removed by Dremmel.
your numbers are not greatly different to mine !
although I have a better heatsink I also have a hotter cpu .
I would not be too worried !

Yeah... the SI-97 is really good. I guess the Zalman will chop off a couple of degrees!

BTW, does this kind of HS benefit from a low speed fan, or a hi-speed fan?

The copper base

Maybe I'll just buy the new AC Copper Silent 3 :P --> It has a different HS, a copper core instead of a copper base, better I assume?

EDIT: 100th post woo hoo

Could someone clear that up?

Those temps are within the acceptable range for athlonXP style chips, dont worry about it.

Thanks for your input guys. But now the question at hand is: Is it worth it for me to ditch this cooler for a Zalman 7000B-AlCu?
