budget cooling for 3000+ Venice Core

Post by MonsterMac » Thu Jul 07, 2005 10:47 pm

Hey guys,

My friend's building a 'low' level gaming pc, and we are doing as much as we can to get the noise down as well. For cooling for his A64 3000+ Venice core, I'm having a tough time deciding between the Freezer A64 (29 bucks) versus the XP-120 (48 bucks). I have the XP-120 myself and know that it is a good performer, but it is more money than he would rather spend. Anyone have some opinions on the Freezer64 or a different (rather inexpensive if possible) heatsink for a 3000+ venice core?

Did you notice how well the Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC heatsink/fan worked in the Antec P180 Review, Part 2 review? Absoutely highest load CPU temp was 49°C in 23°C ambient room. This was with a 3500+ Winchester core. OK, so it was in a P180 case, but stil, this HSF can handle the 3000+ without ramping up. It's a great install & forget quiet solution. MSP is just US$20.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, thanks for mentioning that. Hopefully with all the corners we(him)'re cutting, I can convince him to drop the money on a P180.

I have the Freezer 64 in both my machines. The last one i got had a slightly different fan which is even better then the first one.

I personally think it is great value for money.

If you're really that worried about price, why not use the stock boxed cooler? The venice 3000+ runs INCREDIBLY cool.. and if it's on a mobo that supports Cool n' Quiet (I think they all do now?), I can't think of any reason the stock boxed cooler wouldn't be sufficient.

You can run Venice using STOCK cooler FANLESSLY if you can push the voltage low enough. CnQ will reduce the temperature further. See my undervolting post :P I didn't even use my Arctic Ceramique, just the stock thermal pad, and its already good enough. Unless you're going for some insane overclocking, you don't need to get a new heatsink at all.

Although it'll be quite "slow", it doesn't produce any noise nor large amount of heat.

My picture showed 30 minutes Prime, that was last night. It didn't reboot and still Primeing now without any instability.
