Socket A, TONNES of space, what to do ...

Post by ki_cz » Wed Aug 03, 2005 12:33 pm

I'm running a nice little slave computer that has 1 HD, a geforce 2 mx440 vid card, a 2400+ xp chip on the gigabyte 7n400 motherboard and 4 sticks of pc2100 256meg ram. No soundcard, no disk drive, just a nice big empty box pretty much. What would be a nice, quiet CPU cooling solution? No overclocking is necessary, but stock speeds are a must. The PSU in this machine is very quiet, it's just the CPU fan that is killing me right now.

thanks!

Get a Thermalright SI-97 and a Nexus 92mm or 120mm fan, your choice... I went with the 120mm and undervolted it.

That'll take care of your CPU noise; then there's your video card noise, your hard drive noise, your monitor noise, your coil buzz noise...

Lucky for me the video card fan isn't even necessary and since it's a slave, the HD access is minimal.

I know I said that this is 'killing me' right now, perhaps exagerrating my situation. This computer is pretty much just going to be a render slave and won't be powered on all the time (perhaps 10% of the time my normal PC is running), so I don't need the best solution, just something relatively decent, that is better than the stock CPU fan.

I know I was just kidding around with all the other components, that is, as long you don't catch the silencing bug. But the CPU solution I posted should work great for you.

Would a silentboost/silentcat combination be a lot worse? I'm not really concerned about the price, but certain things are hard to get a hold of where I live with shipping and everything.

Do not get a Thermaltake SilentBoost. They are not quiet at all. It's what I had prior to the SI-97/120mm Nexus. They're all right coolers, but not anywhere near the 21db they claim.

Hopefully someone else can chime in here with alternate solutions if the si-97/nexus combo doesnt work out for you. I've heard good things about the Speeze WhisperRock, but I dont have a subjectiv review I can give you.

Just use the cheapest socket A Arctic Cooling TC HSF you can find. It'll be plenty & it'll be very quiet. Usualyy well under $20.

I'm using Artic Cooling Cooper Lite right now. It's this one:

The fan is very quiet but it vibrated a lot so I cut the legs and hang the fan with rubber bands. Now it's almost totally quiet.

I did a few other things to keep my pc quiet too. I wrote about it here: http://cursedbox.com/?page_id=7[/img]

yeah well i just put in an order for the Zalman 6000-Cu, its not all that expensive and the only one i could get that is on the reccomended list (the 7000 doesnt fit my Asus A7V8X-X dammit...) im not sure how it will perfom though, at least i can always change the fan... oh yeah by the way my computer is also a 2400+ XP, not at all silent yet though. Someone may have a comment on this one though...
