Thermalright XP-120 not compatible with A64 3000+ prcessors?

Post by klankymen » Fri Aug 05, 2005 2:49 pm

as i'm still looking for a good HSF/HS to put into the computer i plan on getting soon, ive been reading reviews on all the good HSFs.

the XP-120 looks to be a really good Heatsink, except i stumbled across this:
Compatibility:

AMD:
Athlon 64 FX 3200+ (socket 939/940) /Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 754) and above
OH no!!
(in context here)
does this mean it will not work with a 3000+ Venice?
if so, why?

and if it does work...
will a XP-120 without any fan be enough to cool the CPU (no overclocking, no gaming)?
or should i just run an undervolted Panaflo?

They list 3200+ because that's the highest model that was out at the time. It's assumed that it supports every model below it. And no it won't work fanless unless you seriously undervolt it and have great airflow.

ok, thanks a lot! i assumed by "and above" they meant not below.

as for fanless, i didnt really think so, ill just have to go with a 5V panaflo as originally planned. :D

There are plenty of people (or at least a few) on these forums who run their XP-120's fanless. A lot of it depends on what kind of temps you're comfortable with. I run mine on an Athlon 64 3500+ with a Nexus at about 5.5 volts. I can't hear it when the case is closed and having a fan there gives me some peace of mind.

well, i might as well spend the extra 15 bucks and get a nexus or panaflo with it, i can always take it out later, when i see how my finished system sounds.

info from this forum is great, but hey, talk is cheap, and the only exact noise levels i'll get will be from running the PC.
