Acceptable temperature levels for a P4 2.4Ghz cpu

Post by fizzy » Mon Dec 26, 2005 10:07 am

What should I be targetting as the CPU temperature (under load and idle) for my P4 2.4Ghz. I have a fanless scythe ninja on it (yes I know overkill but I wil be upgrading to an AMD x2 hopefully soon).

I have fan controllers and want to know what I should be targetting for my fan speeds.

Also are there any utilities people recommend (preferrably of the free or open source variety) for monitoring CPU and GPU temps?

FWIW The setup is a
  • Antec P150
Seasonic S12-330 power supply (I have the HE 430 in another machine the fan positioning of the S12-330 was better suited for the fanless scythe ninja than the HE430)
    ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
One Nexus 120mm case fan (replacing the Antec case fan)
    Scythe Ninja

IIRC the max temp for a P4 before it starts to throttle is about 75°C. I think 50-55 degrees C would the right combination between cooling and silence (obviously lower at idle, maybe 45 degrees C).

Ultimately your temps will dictate your fan speeds.

I use PC Wizard and can highly recommend it:

PC Wizard

Also, it's free.

I have a P4 2.4 A (Northwood, FSb 533), temps are 48/58, no issues.

Great I am at 60 degrees Celsius under load with my quietest settings so I am in decent shape...

Thanks!!! (And I am downloading PC wizard now to give it a try)

Hey Fizzy, just a quick question.

Do you have a fan working along with your Scythe Ninja?

I know you replaced the Tri-Cool exhaust fan with the Nexus 120, but I wonder if you are running another nexus with your Ninja, or are you using it passive (no fan)?

short answer is I am passive (no fan) on the ninja 36 degrees C idle and up to 55 degrees C after a long Age of Empires 3 battle...

Longer answer is I had posted the question about acceptable temps to find out if the passive temps I was seeing were acceptable.

Using a fan mounted on the ninja with the 430HE was giving me 50 degrees C under load (Nexus 120 at 5V).

In case you have a P150... I happened to have a Seasonic S12-330 which has the fan on the bottom of the power supply. I am using this instead of the 430HE power (which has a rear exhaust fan) supply that comes with the P150 case. This has given me about 5 degrees cooler. Than the 430 HE. I assume because the intake fan for the S12 is right on top of the ninja.

I am still considering having the Nexus 120 on the ninja as it isn't any louder, the only thinhg stoping me the space inside the case. With the fan attached to the ninja there just isn't much room to maneuver...

How is that for a rambling long answer ;-)

your asus mobo comes with temp monitoring software! (also lets you OC or UC!)

as far as the gpu temps, that depends on your card, if it has a thermal probe built in!

I have an Asus 9600XT/TVD which lets me OC it if i need to !
