Which CPU socket do you use?
I've noticed that heatsinks compatible with socket 478/754/939/940/775 count as "universal" these days. As an Athlon XP holdout (plays FEAR, HL2 Doom 3, UT 2004 and Far Cry just fine, thank-you-very-much), I was wondering how may SPCR readers use sockets inside versus outside this specification. If this poll gets enough answers, it may also paint a picture of SPCR's Intel/AMD affinity. Socket 5 and earlier tended not to need heatsinks, but I've included them just out of curiosity.
If you have more than one type of socket, please vote for the system you use most.

I use 2 socket 775 systems (a 550 and an 820 BTX)
2 socket A systems (an Athlon 2600+ and a Sempron 3000+)
and one socket 478 system (a 2.4C overclocked to 3.2)
not including laptops.
Now, the socket 775 processors & motherboards I got as a promotional thing from Intel (for their resellers) for about 1/3rd to 1/2 of what they should've costed retail. I never would've purchased them at full price, especially the 550 as it's an absolute nightmare to cool quietly.
The other three were systems/parts abandoned in my former store. I haven't actually purchased a processor retail in what seems like forever, and as such, these aren't so much my choices as the choices available to me.
I think Conroe might have me buying a new proc...

I'm using one of the first (?) 478 boards, the asus p4t-e, with my p4 1.5.
My parents are using the short-lived socket 423 which I have not been able to find any good cooler for. The stock cooler is causing a minor earthquake.

Another SocketA system here. Bought over S478 due to fact that at time XP2500+ was ~£100 cheaper than P4 2.4C. CPU over clocked to 2.2GHz at 1.7V core up from 1.65. May not sound good for quiet system but if I accept 60°C CPU diode temp (folding for SPCR) then the HDD is the dominant noise source. Turning all the fans right up takes ~15°C off.
If I was buying now performance/price/heat would lead me to s939, for an upgrade I think it would have to be dual core to seam worthwhile. When I eventually feel the need have the money to upgrade Intel's new CPUs maybe out and deserving of serious consideration.
Dad's got SocketA duron 1200, Brother SockerA duron 600 and Mum Slot 1 PIII 650@866.

So far, it looks like Socket A is still a pretty popular platform, second only to K8. And I can understand the K8's popularity. I built a Venice 3000+ machine for my brother a few months ago, and while it performs much better than my Barton 3200+, I was unable to get it past the low 40's with it's (surprisingly quiet) stock cooler.
The score brand-wise stands at 76% AMD, 24% Intel. Anyone out there running a VIA?
Also, I have a few hypotheses on why no new Socket A heatsinks are coming out, despite its popularity:

Also, I have a few hypotheses on why no new Socket A heatsinks are coming out, despite its popularity:
- 1. Manufacturers may be unaware of Socket A's prevalence.
2. Most Socket A systems are already built, and the owners may be satisfied with their existing cooling solutions.
3. People sticking with an older platform may be less likely to spend money on an expensive cooling solution.
4. Socket A may be less accomodating of voluminous and/or massive heatsinks.
Yeah, I knew I wouldn't think of all of them, so I threw in the "other" option as an attempt to catch these. A poll can't be edited after it is established, but if we get a significant number of "others", I'll go through the comments (I asked people to specify if "other") and tally them myself.Aris wrote:s479 (which i may add, is not an option in the poll)
