XP-90 with a Celeron D running hot

Post by Mike_Metro » Sat Apr 29, 2006 10:56 am

I am putting together a little home server on a budget. I have a Celeron D 3.06 (478) being cooled by an XP-90 and Nexus 92mm running at full speed. The procs temps are 48C - 51C idle (the mb is running at 33C). I've reseated the XP-90 and reapplied Arctic Silver Ceramique, it didn't improve any.

Is the Celeron D too hot for the XP-90 and Nexus?

The air the Nexus is pushing doesn't feel that hot, could the thermal sensor be wrong?

Or should I not worry too much about it running that hot since it is a "D"?

Thanks

Does it pass the 24h Prime95 test? Might be your case airflow -- if it runs cooler with the cover off it most definately is.

There's just about a 3 degree difference with side on vs off at idle. I retested 46C off and 49 on.

Make sure there is not a BIOS update for your motherboard and get it up to date before you give any credence to the temperature readings. Incorrect CPU temp readings are very common BIOS fixes. Not knowing what motherboard you have makes it difficult to say much more...

I wouldn't be happy with a CPU running 50C at idle, but then it is a Celeron D so it may be that the temp reading is correct. Try getting a more powerful fan, see if it brings temps down any?

I setup a Celeron D a couple months ago and it ran much cooler, but it was the 2.53GHz version, which is probably why.

This seems to be common with all the new Intel processors. I setup a Pentium D820 system for a customer last week and saw 50~53C idle. Running Prime 95 brought the poor thing all the way to 68C, which is pathetic.

I updated the bios earlier, unfortunately it didn't help any. My motherboard is an Intel D865GVHZ

Were are you getting the temp reading from? BIOS screen or the Intel Desktop Utility? If I read the temps in the BIOS screen as opposed to with the system booted into windows, its always about 10C higher. This is with an Intel 945GNT board in my case.

:D Thanks depravedone. That was it. I was reading the temps directly from the bios. I installed Everest and checked the temp again, it's now 41C.

Thanks again.
