Thermalright Ultra-90

Could the Thermalright Ultra-90 be used to passively cool a CPU?

I take it you mean "passively" as in using only airflow from a case fan, no CPU fan; or do you mean no fans at all? Depends on how hot the CPU is; the fins on the U-90 don't look prohibitively close together.

A cooler with a good height, but sadly orientation limited.

I am thinking of using it to passively cool Conroe in the build I am planning to do in June/July. This will be an Antec P-150 case with a 120mm TriCool case fan set to low as the only fan in the entire PC.

for passive cooling the HR-01 would do better, not so tightly packed fins means airflow is better, the Ultra-90 is meant for active cooling.

Sad that you can't change mounting direction, the Ninja is still best for passive CPU cooling.

Could someone please tell me if the HR-01 will work w/ Yonah (socket 479)? The HR-01-775 version is supposed to work w/ 478, and I thought these two were very similar.

my colleague reviewer used an XP-90C on his Yonah test setup here:

the S478 version of the HR-01 will fit without issue
