Replace Zalman CNPS7700 AlCu with Thermalright Ultra-120

Post by marose1 » Fri Jul 28, 2006 8:39 pm

System:
P4 Prescott CPU 3.4GHZ
DFI LP 875P-T Motherboard

I had overheating (shutdown) problems, especially when burning DVD's using DVD shrink. I replaced the Zalman with the Thermalright and a medium speed (86.5 CFM) Panaflo 120 mm Fan.

Although I had to pull the motherboard to make the replacement, installation was relatively simple.

Since the installation, I have had no overheating problems, and my system seems a little quieter with the Panaflo fan as compared with the fan on the CNPS 7700 (Both running at 12 volts).

I'm running a 3.2Ghz 90nm Pentium D and am needing to replace my Zalman AlCu7700 cooler as it either overheats or has to run loudly to keep it cool.

I've been pointed to either the Ninja Scythe or the brand new Thermalright Ultra 120.

My main problem now is deciding on an appropriate fan to attach to these coolers. I'm actually looking for a list of great fans (I'm more than willing to pay for quality) as I'd like to purchase the cooler and the fan together.

Taken from an earlier post and pasted:
Specs:
Pentium D 3.2Ghz 90nm process
Antec P180 (first gen)
Zalman AlCu 7700(? the 120mm one)
Antec TriCool 120mm front intake fan
Antec TriCool 1200 real exhaust fan
VGA shroud removed
Top blowhole is unblocked w/no fan.
Removed HD cage that impedes intake fan.
BFG 7800GT OC w/NV Silencer cooler (vents heat to outside of case)

When FanMate on Zalman cooler is turned down to sub-1000rpm and both TriCools are set to Low the processor throttles at 70C under load. For some reason I thought that this cooling system could be run silently but it turns out i need to run the Zalman at aroun 1600rpm to keep it sufficiently cooled.

Thank you for your time.

Edit: While perusing Recommended Fans, I located the Yate Loon
D12BL-12, the Nexus (no model listed), and the Papst
4412FGL all rated as Recommended. However, it appears that they were recommended gear back in Aug 2004. Are there better, more updated models I should be looking for?

Sorry for the duplicate post but was unsure where I'd get the more appropriate input:

I can pick up the Thermalright Ultra-120 and any of the following fans:
Nexus 120mm Real Silent Case Fan D12SL-12 http://www.coolerguys.com/840556054078.html
Enermax Low noise 120 x 25mm Fan Model UC-12AEBS http://www.coolerguys.com/840556025252.html
YATE LOON 120mm Case Fan - D12SL-12 Black/ Noiseless http://www.coolerguys.com/840556021537.html
Enermax clear blade 120mm Fan with Speed Control Model: UC-12FAB-B http://www.coolerguys.com/840556035015.html

Would any of these fans work with the Ultra-120 without the fan needing to be modified to mount it to the heatsink?
"Unfortunately, the fan clips are not compatible with fans with closed screw mounting holes, such as our reference Nexus 120mm fan. We had to cut out the closed screw "sleeves" with a hacksaw before the clip could be slipped into place."

and
"Just remember to choose a fan with open screw mounting flanges — or be prepared to modify one with closed flanges."

Not to compound your choices, but I'd add to your list

Scythe S-FLEX Dhttp://www.coolerguys.com/sff21.html

and the

GlobalWin NCB http://www.coolerguys.com/840556025054.html

I didn't find it a big deal to cut out the closed corners of the GlobalWin fans - zip, zip with a razor saw and snapped em right out.

pasted from System Advice thread:
Ok, i have a Thermalright Ultra-120 and 1200rpm S-Flex fan on the way now. Also picked up a Zalman FanMate and 16 Poly fan grommet thingies to reduce case fan vibration.
I'll have it all hooked up on sunday and am hoping it is MUCH cooler and quieter than it is now.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I'll make a final post once it's all up and running again.

Massive success w/Ultra-120

Post by AristotleX » Fri Aug 18, 2006 6:15 pm

Once again pasted from System Advice forum:
Ok...here goes:
I've received the following:
ThermalRight Ultra-120
Scythe S-Flex (accidentally ordered the 800rpm instead of the 1200rpm i wanted)
Nexus Fan
Zalman FanMate
Poly-nonrubber fan connecter thingies x16
36" IDE cable to be able to connect both my DVD-RW (near the top of my case) and my Hard drive (located in the bottom chamber of the P180 case) into my one and only IDE port.

Went ahead and attached the Nexus to the top hole of the P180.

Replaced the Zalman 7700 AlCu HSF with the Ultra-120 and the S-Flex. (btw, there is just enough room at the top to fit the 25mm wide fan into the top hole and not bump into the Ultra-120.)

Used about six of the poly grommet thingies.

turned the Antec TriCools (one as intake at the front and one at the rear as an exhaust) to their Low speed setting.

the results are 9-12C lower than with the Zalman at idle (44C) and no throttling needed at load (around 58C).

And it's so quiet!!!

Unfortunately the longer IDE cable didn't work at all. I'll need to order a WD SATA SE16 320GB HD so I'll only have the DVD-RW hooked into the IDE port.

Also, I can now hear the Arctic Silver NV Silencer 5 running....might need to replace that too.

Anywho, thanks so much for all the help. Clearly your advice was a massive success. I'm a bit surprised the Ultra-120 cools so well with such a slow fan but I'm thrilled as it's SOOOOO quiet.

edit: while removing the HSF on the processor, i took the time to actually eyeball the processor and found that it is a Pentium D 820 (2.80Ghz) NOT the 3.2Ghz one I was thinking it was earlier. I was confusing it with my old 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 computer.
