Fan for XP90 - advice needed

Post by TomMe » Tue Sep 12, 2006 12:41 pm

I've decided to buy an XP90 for my AM2 3800+ but I'm not quite sure which fan to use on it. It seems the heatsink can hold 120mm, 92mm and 80mm fans so I have a wide range to choose from.

I'm not overclocking and am looking for something quiet with decent enough temperatures, like my current temperatures using the AMD HSF: 41°C case and 43°C CPU. Currently, the biggest noise in my system is the AMD fan, other than that I have a Seasonic S12-430 and WD2500KS running, and will probably put in a 80mm case fan too. The WD will probably become the noisiest component and I might need to look for some sort of enclosure for it.

Any suggestions on a fan that might go well with the XP90?

On the xp90, you dcan't stuff a 120 into there, without significant mods.

Try one of those panaflo's, maybe a Nexus / yate loon, scythe, etc. Just avoid the antec tri-cool in 92mm which comes in clear. Ugh, worst fans I ever used. at 5v, it's got so much clicking, while at 12v, it's quite loud. 7v will be loud AND clicky at the same time.

I have a nexus on one of mine, and an undervolted panaflo on another, both work great.

Hello,

I would guess that fitting the Scythe 100mm fan would be possible, and it is (apparently) a very quiet fan. The medium speed is very quiet:

...and here is the the low speed model for sale:

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I've been measuring and I think a 92mm fan is about the maximum I can use. Anything above that, and the heatsink of my passive GPU card would come in the way when I use the first PCI-e slot. :( I might change motherboards later on because this really annoys me (it's an MSI K9N SLI Platinum and I have my eyes set on a ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe).

But for the time being, my guess is a 92mm will do the job fine. I'll take a look at those suggestions. More are still welcome!
