Artic Silver vs. Thermal Pad for stock P4 HS/F?

Post by rbmcgee » Mon Feb 24, 2003 7:27 pm

Hi all,

I've just ordered the P4 2.4G processor with the stock hs/f. My question is, should I use the thermal pad that comes with the unit or would it be better to use Artic Silver? I read the article on the P4 HS/f, but couldn't actually determine the recommendation for this.

Arctic Silver should give a 3-5*C improvement over the thermal pad. Do you have the guide on how to remove it properly? Or are you getting an upgraded HS?

Hi ChiefWeasel,

Thought I would start with using the stock hs/f and replace if it is too noisy.

When you say 'how to' guide are you referring to Mike's description in his review of the unit or are you talking about some official guide?

The stock thermal pad will work fine but ASIII will work better. It's a lot easier to remove the stock pad before it's been used so if you think you might ever want to use ASIII I'd remove it now and be done with it.

I have the same "dilemma"... so are you saying, run the P4 without the thermal pad, just bare heatsink, until I get around to buying some AS3?

Boomerang Rapido,

Oooooo, don't do that. Buy the ASIII before you use the P4. Using nothing would not be good at all. You must use something.

Thanks for the warning :)

Well I already bought and installed the P4, with the thermal pad ofcourse. So guess if it sticks to the CPU from the heat I'll have a delicate job removing it again once I get the AS3!?

Besides I'll be getting a new Heatsink (probably a PAL) once... next payday. So I'll get the AS3 at the same time I guess... no point in adding it now and then having to remove and re-apply in 2 weeks.

It's not delicate, it's just a little more difficult and messier (sp?) because it gets glued on by the heat.

I took my stock P4 HS off yesterday and it was relatively easy. The machine had been running for a while and I removed the HS while it was still warm. It twisted off fine with very little force. Otherwise a hairdryer works like a dream.

Scraped the gunk off with a razor blade and cleaned it up with some isopropyl alcohol.

Just be aware that you void that warranty by stripping off the heatsink pad.... a big advantage of the 3.06G; it ships with paste, no pad, so substituting another paste won't kiss your warranty goodbye....
