Best fanless CPU Cooler

Post by mo786 » Sun Nov 12, 2006 9:05 am

What is the current concensus on the best heatsink that doesn't need a fan?

(I have an Athlon 64 and a Abit AV8 Mobo and an Antec case)

It'll be one of the Scythe Nexus and it's close analogues (eg the Thermalright thing). Look in the CPU cooling review section for more information. There are two or three which will fit your bill depending on a few other factors.

When you say you have an "Antec case", what do you mean by that? Antec produce more than one case, of all different sizes, some of which are good, some of which are large enough for passive cooling, some of which are neither of the above. So... more information required if you want the right answer. :)

Thanks - I will check them out

Is it totally safe thesedays for a fanless heatsink?

Forgot the exact model which is why i didn't include it :D - its big enough to take a fairly massive heatsink tho so not a problem

last time i was looking at these things they were fat beasts - is it safe to put it onto the mobo so its sideways? do they need extra support to hold them up (if you see what i mean)

They're not FAT! They just have a... genetic disorder. Think of their feelings, dammit! On a more serious note, I and many others have been running this heatsink for more than a year with no problems in a normal tower case.

For your sake, I hope you're not implying "women's underwear" as the extra support.

I have a Nexus fan being held up in my tower by the sort of elastic foudn in underwear - its slightly dodgy which is why I wanan get rid of the fan!

I stick in a ninja - thanks.
