CPU cooler on MSI 945GM Speedster

Post by simeli » Mon Jan 08, 2007 12:30 am

Has anyone actually installed an aftermarket Cooler on the MSI 945GM Speedster CoreDuo mainboard? I understand that it uses a custom retention module but the holes in the board are standard.

I'd love to be able to mount a Scythe Ninja cooler even if that means loosing the PCIe graphics slot.

Currently I have a 915 Speedster with a Zalman 7000 that runs quite well.

Do you mean the MSI 945GT Speedster-A4R? If so, I had one and I replaced the retention model with a stock P4 one and mounted a Zalman 7000 with no problem. I did have a problem with the board as it was highly unstable. I returned it and went with an AOpen's i945GTm-VHL which has worked great for me and comes with a stock P4 retention module.

yes i do mean the MSI 945GT Speedster-A4R. Did you run it with a core2duo or a core duo? I read in a German forum that most people running it with a core2duo have problems. Memory also seemed to be a source of trouble.

I am mostly interested in the msi for it's 4x PCIe slot (RAID controller). Otherwise i'd just stick with the 915GM i have. It's rock solid with Linux and MythTV running 24/7

Hi
I did bought the MSI 945GT-speedster-A4R last month and I have used it with Core 2 duo. first I did have problem with it, but it was propably bad installation of CPU by company which did assembled the computer, but otherwise has worked fine.
