BEST SILENT HEATSINK FOR XP2200+??

Hey guys, first post here and I must say I am excited. =) Always wanted a site directly related to the joy of silent pc's. Anyways, I want to turn my guy silent so I first wanted to know what was the best heatsink you guys liked? I've heard good things about the new Zalman 7000 I believe, also the new coolermaster looked good. I just want silence. I am not gonna OC (that's for my watercooled beast

) just something to keep it cool. I also have two 120mm panaflo's blowing on it as well...I like it cool. Thanks!!

Welcome DReborn, have you read the recommend section in the main SPCR site. The one you mentioned and the Thermalright SLK-900 are currently the kings of P4 cooling.

Even a 5v panaflo is more than sufficient for cooling your CPU and beyond.

Thanks for getting back so quickly! So, you think the SLK-900 is still the best for AMD chips, huh? Could I still throw a Pana L1A, Stealth, or low flow papst on there? Should be cool enough (and silent enough!) right? Thanks! Oh, and yes, I did check out the recommended but I didn't know if it was up to date on the lates and greatest

The only thing about the SLK-900, you got to make sure you have enough room around your CPU and no capacitors are in the way. It fits fine for p4 though. The Zalman CNPS7000 cooler is for P4, but a AMD one is scheduled soon.

But I like the SLK-900 becuase it's more flexible on what fan you have.

Just cause I couldn't take the whining of the stock cooler anymore (never been a patient man...) I went ahead and bought the 6500cu. I have two 120mm L1A's blowing right over it so I was thinking that I could just not put on the overhead fan and leave the massive flower heatsink to do it's work. Would my 2200+ explode?

Since this is going to turn out to be my HTPC, slowly but surely, I am trying to get it silent... =)

I don't think you can run it fanless. You will get a very unstable system, it won't explode as such.

Are you undervolting your fans?

Run them at 5volts and it will create less noise. Another thing is why have you got two 120mm fan blowing over it? 1 120mm is more than enough..

Well, to answer your question first. I have a really large Inwin Q500 case and I wanted tons of airflow at low noise (which I achieved by having two 120's blow in from the window and two suck the air out at the top). Overall, I have a fairly cool case. What was getting me was the damn stock heatsink, whining and all. With the 6500cu, I though the fan is placed on the pci slot and is just blowing down on top of the heatsink without actually touching the sink. Since the 120's are only about an 3 inches above the heatsink, wouldn't that be sufficient? Lastly, how do you undervolt your fans? Thanks!

wel, u shouldnt plan on using it, since it wnt fit on your 2200+......

SORRY, SORRY...I'm an idiot. Meant 6000cu. Yeah, I really wanted the new 7000 but it isn't coming out yet (and I can't take this fan any longer) for the socket A. Sorry about the confusion. So, with the 6000cu, would my setup be OK? Right now my ASUS BIOS says my cpu is cruisin' at 49 and I know the ASUS probes are on the high side so I have room to breathe right? Thanks!

well, itll be OK, but the 6000 is slot smaller than the 6500. so i would not suggest running it without any fans even if u have a fairly strong front case fan. its just not that big, and these new xp's just produce too much heat.

What generation is your XP 2200+? Palomino, Thoroughbred, or Thoroughbred 'B'? This will make a big difference in the temps that you will see.
