Dilemna between Scythe Ninja & Thermalright Ultra!

Post by DeusExa » Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:02 am

OK - my first post here guys, hope you could help me out!

My dilemna:

I'm building a performance rig, with a Antec P180B rev1.1 case, Q6600 G0 stepping stone, 2 GB RAM, Asus P5K Deluxe Mobo.
I want to OC to ~ 3-3.2GHz at under 60C Idle on my Q6600.

There's a deal on Newegg that EXPIRES TODAY for the Scythe Ninja Rev.B for 37$ shipped (Promo code)

I want to get it, but don't know about its cooling.- on anandtech,
http://anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/sh ... i=2965&p=5
it seems like the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme blows pass it with a scythe sflex fan, literally...

If I want to achieve great cooling/low sound, which cooler should I go with?

The Scythe Ninja: 37$
Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme: 65$ (w/o fan)

I'm looking for best performance vs price...

Thanks!!
Have to make decision by today..

Go for Ultra in Socket 775. Ninja has had pressure issues with push pins. Ultra is far better in Socket 775. For AMD I'd advice Ninja over Ultra 120 ( Extreme but in Intel, Thermalright's mounting is far superior atm.

Oh, yes, some peoples have reported quality issues with ultra-120 extreme (which have been absent in Ultra-120). Difference between Ultra-120 and Ultra-120 extreme is not that great in cooling power.

But you plan overclocking so Ultra-120 Extreme is better then. For stock speed I'd take regular Ultra-120. For overclocking I'd take Ultra-120 extreme (for intels )

Is mounting the only trouble?

One of my friend's just got the ninja, and he said it took him a good 20min to install it, but no troubles after that...

There has been a lot problems with Scythe mountings in these forums. Of course some use Ninja rev B LGA-775 without complains. But there is too much complains of LGA-775 attachment just to ignore them.

Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme. For the same reasons as explained by thejamppa.

go with the Ninja, and get a thermalright bolt-through mounting kit. Works like a charm for me. Was a pain to install though, took me about 30 minutes. But my temps dropped 8-10 degrees when I put replaced the push pins with a backplate+screws, and the kit only cost me 6 bucks.

To cool a hot CPU, the Thermalright will be more effective. To cool a not overclocked less hot cpu, you can use a Ninja without a fan.

When using a fan, the Ultra-120 is at least as effective as the Ninja whatever the speed of the fan is ( http://www.silentpcreview.com/article646-page3.html ). According to Anandtech, the Extreme version vs. the original Ultra-120 will help you overclock the CPU even more. http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling/sh ... i=2981&p=3

:? :? :? Back and forth and back and.....

What would be the best for me if I want to keep it pretty cool
(Idle around 40-50C-ish..? )AND OC it to around 3.2GHz, it being quiet enough at that speed?

Deciding today, Thanks!!!

The Ultra 120 Extreme with 1200-1300 rpm fan like the Yate loon D12SL-12.

Use your MB to control the speed of the fan. It should inaudible on idle ( about 600-800 rpm ) and make a slight wooshing sound at full speed. You should have no troubles keeping it under 40 on idle. If the temperature is still too high for you ( over 60 peak ) , check your case ventilation or install a faster fan like the Antec Tricool on the HS but it won't be quiet anymore.

By the way, I suggest you get the P182 instead of the P180 1.1. For a few bucks you can run the cables under the motherboard try without modifying the case.

If I choose to get the Thermalright, then my friend has a Scythe SFlex for me...

Yeah, the Rev1.1 has a raised Mobo tray, it's basically the P182 in Black!

anyone else for the ninja/thermalright?

5 hours left until I make my decision!!!

Thanks

Make sure the P180 1.1 has holes on top of the tray and on the right. You can see the holes here http://www.silentpcreview.com/article741-page4.html on the P182.

Mike Chin said in his article about the P182 that those holes are not on the P180. Also, Devon Cooke didn't mention them in the P180 re-review for the P180 1.1 http://www.silentpcreview.com/article255-page13.html

However, you're right about the color. The P182 is not black, it's more like a dark grey...

Any big tower heat sink will cool this CPU: Ninja, HR-01, U-120, etc, etc.

DAMMMMM.......Newegg won't knock off the promo....?????

Anyone say the Thermalright and the Scythe Sflex a good combo..

Also, have anyone ACTUALLY achieved the temps on anandtech in person?

Checked my P180b- EXACTLY the same as the P182 - holes, raised tray, etc.!
Thanks, though! (got it for less than $70)
