Hi,

Here's a cooler for the Velociraptor:

...but the fins all seem to be perpendicular to the ideal orientation.

That Raptor cooler looks major overkill. The Velociraptor runs pretty cool anyway since its smaller than normal drives, and the cooler that comes with it provides perfectly adequate cooling, unless your using it in a passive system (why?) or ambient temps of 50c are standard in your part of the world.

If they wanted to really cool it well they'd have a top plate as well, since thats where most of the heat will come off the drive.
And i expect that this all metal hard mounted design wont be fantastic for noise.

Actually, the majority of heat from hard drives is emitted along the sides, not the top.

That's certainly true for conventionally mounted HDDs, which use the aluminum HDD mounting rack as a defacto heat sink. For those few people (more of them here at SPCR) who suspend their hard drives, most of the heat dissipation comes from the bottom of the drive via spot cooling.

Wow. We'll need titanium reinforced motherboards at this rate...

A TR engineer at Computex 2008 told me that the HD cooler will work with other 2.5" HDs too - if they decide to actually put it into production! The cooler felt remarkably solid as I couldn't cause the fins to rattle.

Some might say 6 heatpipes for a 2.5" drive cooler is beyond excessive.

But does not make the cooler less desirable... :D
