HR-01Plus and HR-01X

Post by dman777 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:24 am

The HR-01 Plus got the number one spot for being the quietest but still effective cpu cooler. But it's not rated for AMD K8's, and that's what I have. On the Thermalright site the HR-01X is rated for AMD K8's. I asked their tech support the difference between the two and they said that the difference between the HR-01Plus and HR-01X is the bracket, the heatsink it self is the same. If you want to mount the HR-01 series onto Socket F Opteron, you need to buy 939 Bolt thru kit. This seems so simple and fundamental, but I just was curious if anyone else can confirm this because I am thinking about buying the HR-01X.

If you mount the "+" at a 45 degree angle, doesn't that make it an "x"?

Sorry, what I meant to say was, if the thermal profiles of the AMD and Intel CPU match, then you should be in the green as far as cooling capacity goes. Check the processor specifications.

I've just bought an HR-01, too, and even though it's for an Intel I've bought a bolt-through kit just the same -- the thing is about twice the recommended weight for a CPU cooler (450g).

So if I bought the X version the heatsink would sit at a 45 angle instead of 90 degrees?

Also, if you have an AMD K8 how come you didn't just get the X version instead?

For any version of the HR-01 to be mounted with the widest face toward the rear of the case, you need the Thermalright S-Clip. I've used one with the HR-01+, works just fine. It's a bit tight, due to the extra heatpipes, but it installed, and I'm using right now. Otherwise, if you don't use the s-clip, the wide face of the heatsink will face the top and bottom of your case. Depending on your case, this might be good or bad.

If this is true, then I have to buy the S clip for the H1-01X. If this is so, then what would be the difference betweent the HR-01plus and the HR-01X since I have to buy the S clip anyways?

It looks like the HR-01X is for server sockets, the mounting bracket is different. I don't know if it would line up with the mounting holes in an AM2/+ board, so that could be an issue. I don't know enough to answer the question though. All I know is that the HR-01X/+ are the same physical cooler, with different mounting hardware.

Like ryboto said: the HR-01X has a different mounting bracket. The HR-01+ with the S-clip option is what you need.

KlaymenDK's reply was tongue-in-cheek: no standard Thermalright mounting kit would let the heatsink be mounted at a 45 degree angle :)

I have a dual core socket 939 cpu on a ASUS A8n-sli Premium motherboard. Would the H1-01X be needed since it has the Opteron Icon on it on the Thermalright website?
