4850e/HR01Plus Passive?

Post by Derek Baker » Fri Nov 07, 2008 6:09 am

Bought a Scythe Flex 120 1200rpm for my 4850e, but am wondering about running it passively.

Case is an Akasa Eclipse with the same type of Flex @ 5v as the only fan; the PSU is an old unmodded S12-430 .

Thanks.

Probably, but it depends on what else you have in your case (GPU, # of HDDs).

You might want to consider a duct as well.

<shrugs> flip the power switch and takes some temp readings w/o the fan. If it's higher than you like, add the scythe to the equation.

Rest of the system will be one 7200rpm HDD, DVD-ROM, 2GB DDR2 and a TV Card.

I think that would totally work just fine. Since that's a 45w CPU it can handle it just fine. I'm running my HR-01 plus fan less on my e6300 and I know that's hotter than a 4850e

like Elijah, I was passively cooling a "warmer" chip with my HR-01+, so, you should be fine. I was using an X2 4000+ at 2.5ghz, 1.15v. You could probably undervolt the CPU a bit too, it might help temps under load.

I run the 4850e passively with the HR-01+ and my temp are far from being warm. I only have one exhaust fan (120mm nexus) in the case.

Make sure you enable C&Q in the bios - my CPU runs most of the time at 1Ghz.

Im using an HR-01+ in my system on my E6600 passively. I'm using one case fan for my entire case. I have one fan (stock) on my video card and the fan in my PSU at the bottom of the case and thats it. Here's a picture for reference.

Like the others have said, it should be fine.

I run a 65W 4200+ passively with a mini ninja, with a 120mm PSU fan and 1 120mm exhaust fan.

Thanks to all those who posted.

Been running it passive for a few days now: no apparent problems.

Hi, I'm keen to do the same. What's your idle temp like ?

I run a DO stepping X2 6000+ (Brisbane core 89 watt ) semi passive ( stock mini P180 fans only ) in 38 -40c ambient without any problems on a TR - HR01 plus . But it has very good airflow . It gets to 58 or 58c under load but is not likely to fry so a 45 watt CPU should not be any problem at all , so long as you have decent airflow . Although my machine does not have a graphics card ( GF8200 onboard ) it has 7 hard drives ( 6 x 1tb and 1 x 160gig ) Two of the drives are in the bottom CD bays in Trayless SATA hot swap bays ( I just put them in there to keep the PSU warm  ) These would add some heat , but they do not appear to get hot . After the long ramble the point is the HR01+ can cope with quite a bit ! so go for it .
