Xigmatek S1283V vs. S1283

Post by ilh » Fri Feb 27, 2009 8:27 am

Has anyone tried the S1283V? It appears to be the S1283 plus the "crossbow" mount. The copper heat pipes appear to be plated silver, and the fan might be different.

It is cheaper than the 1283 + separate crossbow.

Hi Lee (we're neighbors!),

The plating is probably nickel? Do you have a link to the HDT-S1283V?

So we are: we must be 2-3 miles apart. Yes, I'm sure it is nickel.

I'm not thrilled about the LED fan. I've ordered one to try for a work build and can compare unscientifically with a 1283.

I'm happy with the 1283 other than the push pin mount. I actually ordered an add-on crossbow but ordered the wrong one. Still, the 1283 knocked 15-20C off a QX6700 at full tilt compared to a Ninja mini, and is much quieter too.

Hi Lee,

The fan looks to be a very similar design, but the translucent plastic is troubling -- it will probably be noisier than their other fan if it is made out of opaque plastic; all else being equal.

I'm sure there won't be a hair's breadth between them in performance; unless the nickel plating affects things.

One notable difference is the S1283V "Dark Knight" does not come with the spoiler to aim airflow toward rear CPU power supply components. I don't know that the spoiler on the S1283 did much though.

The finish is sort of a black chrome look. I don't care one way or the other.

The crossbow mount works well with no PCB flex. I hate the default Intel push pins. I did have to trim 3 soldered pins on the back down flush with the PCB so they don't short against the metal crossbow.

Overall a good deal at $35ish. The fan probably is a bit noisier and seems to run a bit faster (1200rpm vs. 800rpm) with Q-fan enabled in BIOS.
