Which fanless Heatsink for C2D E8400

Post by coop » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:44 pm

Hello,

I am in the process of building an MATX computer.

Motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H
Processor:C2D E8400
Case: APEVIA X-QPACK2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811144140 with support bar removed

I will have lots of room height wise but not so much width wise. I have considered the scythe ninja 2 but would have to bend a few of the fins to have it fit correctly. Can anyone suggest what I can also use for a fanless or passive heatsink in this configuration?

Thanks.

Is the Mini-Ninja small enough?

Short wise yes but I can go taller. Would the thermalright hr-01 plus work or is there a newer better version that might work better and it would have to go in sideways.

Hi,

I would consider the Scythe Mungen 2, and the Xigmatek HDT-S1283, as well as the Thermalright HR-01 Plus. Definitely get the bolt-through kit for any that do not come with it.

Not sure how it would fit in your case, but I'm running my E8400 with a fanless Xigmatek HDT-S1283. Just a single Nexus 12cm exhaust fan, Antec Solo, and a couple 100mm fans on a Scythe Musashi GPU cooler. CPU idles in the high 30C range, and loads around 55C.

I like the S1283 as well...my concern is the spacing between the case and the location of the CPU socket...will a 120mm tower fit in there?

It should look like this:

Third picture down.

And thanks for the above suggestions. Looks like I can fit any of those heatsinks into the case, I am just looking for what would be considered the best passive solution.

I'm also looking for a fanless heat sink for this chip. But I would require a lower profile. I won't know exactly until I get the new case, a Moneual Moncaso 312B.

More than likely I'll end up using a low profile heat sink and a fan. Passive is wishful thinking under the best conditions.

I've got a Minja on an E8500 and it works great.
