E8400 w/ Passive mini ninja = 75c @ Full Load.....too high?

Post by gundam83 » Thu May 14, 2009 12:44 am

I'm running a 120mm exhaust fan in my P180 (with a 120mm intake fan in the upper HDD cage) with a passive Scythe Mini Ninja and I'm getting low 40's on idle and 75C @ full load using prime95 (large). Is this too high? I know I will rarely touch the full load temps, but I'm still a tad reluctant to leave this passive setup. Adding the stock 80mm fan lowers the temp to 54C @ full load.

75C seems dangerously close to damaging the CPU. Improved cooling at full load is definitely advisable.

Relax man, you're good to go. 25C distance to TJmax is perfect fine.
For comparison take a look at this.

If Tjmax for the Q9550 is 100C, then 130C is impossible.

Why? Intel never release thermal shutdown temp for desktop processors.
All we know is thermal throttle begins at 2-3°C distance to TJMax and it seems that thermal shutdown is beyond 136°C. :D

75C with that configuration seems a bit high. gundam83, do you overclock the CPU? If you run it at stock 3.0GHz you could probably lower the Vcore to ~1.1v and get the temps down a bit. You could also try moving the intake fan to the top of the P180 and see if a negative pressure setup (both fans sucking air out of the case) would give any more airflow through the Minja.

I don't have my E8400 with mini ninja any more, but my temps were well below that. Like alot below that.

If it's possible, I'd highly recommend doing a little undervolting. I suspect you could get load temps down to around 65C with some good undervolting. Otherwise is there any chance of having a case fan or something else that can help add more airflow near the heatsink?
