Shuriken: [air flow up or down]?

Post by rei » Fri Jun 05, 2009 5:31 am

I have an E8400 (soon to be Q9400) that I'm worried may be running too hot. It's in a Silverstone SG02-F SFF mATX case like the pictures here:

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p ... ostcount=1

I have a Corsair HX520 PSU like depicted above and a Scythe Shuriken HSF on the CPU directly underneath. Granted things run a little hotter since I have a GTX 260 and PCI sound card in there as well (effectively walling off past the end of the HD cage)

Has anyone reversed the fan direction on the Scythe Shuriken so that instead of normally blowing air down, that it sucks up into the 120mm (not directly above it though, semi-close) fan of the Corsair PSU?

My idle temps are 45ish with it blowing down normally.

Hi,

You left out the key bit: what is the temperature(s) that you are seeing?

There is someone named "leiff" (sp?) who has posted here and at AVSForums HTPC section with the same case. He and another poster had both toyed with the fan sucking air into the PSU. I'm sure they had better temps, but I don't remember the details.

Do a search on his ID and see..

Hi,

You can always try it the other way? But your temps sound fine to me...

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't switched it yet since I've been busy. I did get the store to swap out the E8400 for a Q8400 and temps remain the same. 40-45 C idle and 65-70 C load.

So that's fine? This is with it 15-20 C outside. With summer there, things will heat up 10-15 degrees more.

As we all know, the Corsair HX520 is quiet (with its fan moving slowly and quietly) and with my hand at the back it doesn't feel like the large 120mm fan on its bottom is moving much air at all so I'm not sure how much it would harm/help.

I think I'll do some more research, thanks.

I would have the CPU fan move air into the power supply.

If the distance between the heatsink and power supply is very small, it would be even better to simply duct the heatsink to the PSU fan.

OK I have nothing to add to this thread, but I just looked at the title and started laughing...I mean come on that title is awful. You should have named it "blow air over the heatsink or pull air over it" I mean blow or suck? That's awful!

Thanks guys. Reversing the fan on the Shuriken lowered temps by around 5C so it's 34-39-41-44 idle with the fan set to only 1200rpm, down 1000rpm from full blast.

If I set the other 3 case fans to 1100 rpm and the GTX to 25% with RivaTuner, things are much more pleasant. GTX idles at 55C-60C instead of 45-50C.

I'm happy.
