Hey all, just wanted to get some recommendations for good hs / hs+fan combo for the amd 940 phenom II cpu (am2/am2+ socket)
thejamppa recommended : Sun-beam core-contact freezer, Scythe Mugen 2 or Noctua U12P
any other recommendations?
i think the hr-01+ has brackets for am2 as well, and what about the ninja mini? i saw someone here on spcr running the 940 on a ninja mini passively.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Best regards,

1) Do you want a solution that could work passively as well?
2) Are you going to overclock your CPU by any chance?
3) Any budget limit? CPU coolers can be expensive too...
4) Willing to mod a product to achieve better performance?
1) well, currently on another pc i have an e8400 running with hr-01+ passively. I wouldn't mind if it had active cooling or passive because either way is fine with me as long as the temps are reasonable
2) nope, not gonna OC the cpu
3) for the budget i think i'd be willing to spend ~$55. i saw some coolers that were 79.99 and that was a no-no for me
4) definitely willing to mod a product to achieve greater performance
The 940 passive with a Minja? Sounds unbelievable! Anyone got a link to that?
Anyway, I am using a Xigmatek HDT-S1284EE ($40) on a Ph II 720. The base of the 1284EE is a perfect fit for the Phenom II heatspreader, so all four heatpipes (the difference to the HDT1283 reviewed by SPCR) make very good contact with the heatspreader.
Comes with fan decouplers, and the installation was painless.
It is quite large though, so check your clearance. The side panels on my case only close with a bit of force applied.
I have yet to exceed 10 C rise during regular use, though that is with a not quite silent Slipstream 1200 strapped on (which my MB thankfully runs at 800 RPM during idle).

thanks again thejamppa, yeah i think i won't be able to get the noctuna or the sunbeam, so either the scythe mugen 2 or the sythe ninja might be my best bet like u saidthejamppa wrote:Scythe Mugen 2 is well worth of consideration. Its price is usually under 50$. That price range effectively limits the Noctua out of the picture. And Sunbeam core-contact freezer might be bit hard to find.
If somone cooled 940 passively with Minja, then Ninja 2 is also worth of consideration.
sorry it just says scythe ninja, not sure if it's a minja :XK.Murx wrote:The 940 passive with a Minja? Sounds unbelievable! Anyone got a link to that?
