A Tall Order? :D

Post by Ollie` » Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:45 pm

Hey, I am looking for the cheapest top down (blows air down) LGA775 cooler that comes with a back plate and thermal compound that doesn't suck. Also should be reasonably quiet and available in Canada ... Any ideas? LOL

Looking at this right now.. COOLER MASTER GeminII S
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6835103046
Seems to fit the bill but i'm unsure about the compound or how quiet a 1000RPM CM fan is going to be

If you must know why .. I am cheap. Cooler + back plate + thermal compound adds up hehe :D

I use the ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan.
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6835118115 It does a great job cooling components near the CPU with the airflow coming off the CPU fan.

I was looking at that one .. Might have been a slightly cheaper one. I really prefer PWM over manual control and i'm not sure it would clear the heat sink on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L

The CM looks nice (definatly look like it would be better than any 7xxx Zalman)

I have one of those CM 120mm fans and it is ~950@12V. I think in a decent case it would not reach your ears. If not you can allways run it @7V.

What is the reason for the TRUE change anyway?

That build isn't mine. Was just the first pic of the board i found showing the heat sink.

I decided to go with Gigabyte EP45-UD3R + Xigmatek HDT-S1283 Instead

the mugen 2 is better than the xigmatek... it cools better, it's quieter, and the cost is similar, or maybe even cheaper... the only drawback is that it's much bigger.

i have it running on the ep45t-ud3lr

I was looking at the Mugen 2 (after i decided not to go top down) but chose the Xigmatek because it looks better IMO hehe

Hi Ollie,

The Mugen 2 comes with a bolt-through bracket, and it is less money than the Xigmatek; which comes with the push pin mount. I think the Mugen 2 is probably a be a better unit, because it has wider spaced fins and has the air gaps through the middle, as well.

Did you get the both through kit for the HDT-S1283?

[Edit: Mike C. just posted the SPCR review of the Mugen 2: http://www.silentpcreview.com/scythe-mugen2 ]

I already ordered it and it will get here today. I got a good deal on the HDT-S1283 and yes i did get a bolt kit (the Thermalright one). I got both for like a dollar more then the Mugan 2.

I plan to do something like this (the duct) if i don't get lazy..
