[Inaudible] cpu cooler for intel e5200?

Post by telebog » Fri Aug 21, 2009 3:21 am

I want to have an inaudible cpu cooler for my e5200. I don't overclock.
So I read some reviews and I found
Arctic Cooling Alpine 7
Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 Gt
Scythe KATANA 3

Wich of those are better for silence, k I know alpine 7 gt is louder at high rpm, but for my pc it will be used on very low rpm 500-600(is enough). If there is now diference in silence I want the cheaper. Or if some one cand sugest another cooler that is more silence I apreciate.

Again I want silence (dead silence) not overclock or very low temp.

Hello & welcome to SPCR,

Anything with a fan will probably not be inaudible. Is you case large enough to fit a tower heatsink? This could likely be used without a fan. If so, I'd recommend the Scythe Mugen 2, with it included bolt through mount.

My case is Foxconn TLA436(Dimensions(W/H/D): 180*420*440mm)

The problem is that i have no fan. And if I put an cooler with no fun I guess I have to install an 12cm fan to exhaust hot air. And I read reviews from spcr and there is no difference between let say a silent nexus 12cm fan and the fans from Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 and Scythe KATANA 3, on low rpm. Or i'm wrong? Beacause if there is no difference (in silence) betwen those solutions I preffer the cheap one :).

My system is:
Asus p5ql-e
intel e 5200
Palit 8600Gt sonic + accelero S2 with no fan (soon)
Corsair CMPSU-400CX
Wd 6400AAKS

Here are my recommendations:

Get a tower heatsink that will fit your case.

An E5200 should be easily passively cooled by something like a Xigmatek S1283 (unless you are running at full load for many hours). However, I'm not sure if you can fit one of those in your case. The other problem is that you have a top mounted power supply, and hot air rises. If you are running the other parts passively, then the PSU fan will ramp up (if it is thermally controlled) to exhaust the hot air.

I'd still recommend a tower heatsink. Maybe a Xigmatek S963. If you need to get one of these smaller tower heatsinks you will need a fan. I would not attach this to the heatsink, I'd attach it to the case exhaust spot, and then duct it to the heatsink (to pull heat away). Otherwise (if you place the fan on the heatsink) the hot air may not actually make its way out of the case.

In conclusion, I'd get a fan (to take the pressure off the PSU fan - better to have 2 at low speed than that PSU fan running at a higher speed) attach it to the case, and duct it to a tower heatsink. Also don't run a top down cooler without an exhaust, the airflow doesn't have a clear path out.

...

Another question, a heatsink all from alluminium (H/W/D) 50*100*100 mm can cool this cpu? Because I found this http://picasaweb.google.ro/telebog/Cool ... 7810880242 heatsink an the owner said that this cool without a ventilator.

FWIW, I have a Thermalright HR-01 Plus with a Slipstream 800rpm at 5V and it is inaudible to me.

With my E5200 at 2Ghz and 1.0V, temps are 31/38 idle and 38/46 full CPU load.

If your case can fit a full 120mm fan tower heatsink, I'd recommend either the HR-01 Plus or the Xigmatek S1283 with bolt through kit.

The Mugen 2 might also be a good choice as it comes with a good stock fan.

From the pic of your case on Newegg, you only have a rear 90mm fan with a pretty restrictive grill. You should consider cutting this out with some metal cutting tool of your choice (just uninstall all your hardware from your case before starting cutting).

An undervolted Nexus 92mm fan would be a good choice for a rear exhaust fan.

Thanks for your answers.

I bought AC alpine 7 gt, and at 800 rpm is al most inaudible from 30 cm, at 1300 rpm it became audible and can be compared with the stock cooler from corsair 400W PSU (a silent psu from reviews).

So with only 7Euro and no other ventilators on the case I have a silent cpu cooler. Temperature is 41-43C on idle (800rpm).
