Good heatsink for i7 920 that is less than 150mm tall?

Post by somename » Thu Aug 27, 2009 11:00 am

I just installed a i7 system in a 4u case, and I've found Mugen 2 I bought is slightly too tall for it. Apparently, most of the top reviewed coolers(u12p, TRUE, etc..) are all same or bigger sized than Mugen 2, and I was hoping if someone could suggest a good smaller cooler.

I considered Kabuto and Zipang 2. but I am a bit apprehensive about top down coolers since there won't be a whole lot of room above the cooler for air flow. Zipang 2 is probably short enough, but I think there might not be enough clearance for my motherboard.

Thanks for the help/

The Noctua NH-C12P is 114mm tall, see http://www.noctua.at/pdf/infosheets/noc ... 12p_en.pdf including the fan of course. This will be fine if you are keeping to stock speeds. In view of the thermal characteristics of the i7, I would not attempt to run a fixed speed fan with this particular cooler, and would recommend substituting a PWM fan. For me the Akasa Apache would be a favourite for this.

Edit: Could add that I have actually fitted the NH-C12P to an i7 system with a Akasa PWM fan. The Noctua SecuFirm2 bolt down kit for the 1366 socket is excellent, it is not supplied with the Noctua NH-C12P but Noctua will supply it free of charge on request.

Hi, the Zipang2 as recently reviewed is compatible with s1366 and is 106mm tall with fan so plenty short enough. It should be able to cool i7 quietly, although may want to look in to PWM fan to aid motherboard fan control. Will depend on the motherboard if need PWM fan to control fan speed, or maybe not aiming for absolute quiet and running fixed speed of the good included 140mm fan would be OK.
Regards, Seb

A tower cooler with a 92mm Fan perhaps.

You need to buy a S1366 retention kit separately.

A similar one with S1366 retention included:

You may try thermalright si-128 se hsf with bolt-thru-kit for ifx-14. It's 91mm tall without fan.

Thermalright HR-01 4U, 145 mm tall. I guess you have to get the right bracket for it, I'm not sure but I think this one will fit.

Thermalright AXP-140. 70 mm tall without fan Again, you need the right bracket.

The SE version is a great choice, but is it still available? Please tell me if you know anything.

Edit: Coolermaster Geminii S, 63 mm without fan.

Yes, it is still available in Hong Kong. :D

Oh nice. :P

I think it seems like an awesome cooler, but SPCR have never tested it, unfortunately.

Xbitlabs says it's better than the 120 Ultra Extreme, and runs only 2° hotter than the AXP-140 (different fans).

Not sure just how much different from the 128 it would be...

Hi Mats,

I have both HSF (SI-128 SE & Ultra-120 Extreme Rev C). I tested them on my i7 920 (OC to 3.6GHz). I think the performance of SI-128 SE is on par with Ultra-120 Extreme. The CPU temp is about the same with both HSF, but the NB&SB temps are 7-9C lower with SI-128 SE than Ultra-120 Ex.

You will need IFX bolt-thru-kit to mount it on LGA1366 mobo.

The original SI-128 can't beat the original 120 Ultra in your test, while the SI-128 SE beats the 120 Ultra Extreme in Xbitlabs test. That's quite a difference to me.
The SE (Silent Edition, not Second Edition) is, after all, "The best of the SI-series and the HR-series combined" according to Thermalright.

Xbitlabs found three differences:
- The cooler is mounted with spring-loaded screws to a backplate made of steel.
- Different fins
- Heatpipes soldered to the base (their non-SE was glued, though they admit that it may have nothing to do with retail samples)

The Xigmatek is an excellent cooler at it's price point but be aware that the cooling fins are super thin and easily bent when removing / attaching the fan, the rubber grommets used to attach the fan are fiddly to install and you only get 4, there are no spares, if you tear one your CPU is bricked. Right now I'm looking for a set of replacement grommets and can't find anyone with stock in the UK.

I'll put in a vote for the Noctua NH-C12P. I have it paired with the Noctua 120mm PWM fan and it's great. I wanted a heatsink of this type to blow down onto the MB and give other nearby components some cooling, but a side effect of its design is the shorter height. My CPU has never gotten above 45 degC, and I can't hear it in my Antec case now that I've blocked off the top rear vent.

It's still pretty tall, though; I'd check beforehand to make sure it will fit in a 4U with enough room for the fan to have decent intake room. I have it in an Antec P183, so it's not an issue in my installation.

bobov - How easy was it to do the install for the SI-128 SE using the 1366 bolt-thru kit? Thermalright does not indicate that this kit supports using this cooler with a 1366 mobo and provides no instructions for doing so. I would not bother with the hassle but the case I am looking at (Antec P193) only supports up to 140 mm coolers.....
