fanless coolijng for p4 2.4, socket 478

Post by chedderslam » Sun Aug 30, 2009 8:27 pm

I am looking to build a new system that will be water cooled for minimum noise. I plan to keep running my old system as a web/database server. It currently has a p4 2.4 ghz, and the fan is louder than I like. Looking for coolers I came across an article reviewing the Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja heatsink. (can't post link, too new, that sucks)

It looks like they were not able to get the computer to run in fanless mode, although it was horizontal during testing.

Can anyone recommend a good fanless cooler for the socket 478, including the cheapest place to buy it?

Thanks.

I do not think you will be able to cool a P4 without a fan I guess this is a 60W TDP I do not know if it will undervolt but anything more than 20 max 25W will need a fan.

I cannot guarantee it, but I'm pretty confident that in a case with reasonable airflow, you would be able to cool that processor with a Ninja. Newegg is selling the successor to the Ninja, the Ninja 2, right now, though it is out of stock at the moment.

Back in the day, I could almost cool a Prescott P4 @ 3.73GHz without a fan directly on the heatsink, though there were 2 fans nearby...

Also, if fanless doesn't work out, the Ninja comes with an excellent fan which would be very quiet anyways...

Is there a lower wattage processor that I could put in there that would work with fanless cooling?

Are you talking socket 478 to reuse the board or a new system?

478 to reuse the board. I am trying to spend as little as possible.

I used to run 3.0c with single 800 rpm noctua as exhaust fan. But I also used original Ninja which put more pressure on the CPU, I also run it vertical and I don't think I've ever stressed CPU 100% for any long period of time, but it worked. You definitely won't be able to cool it passively though.

What would be the quietest fan that I could use?

If you can duct it, and if you are not going to load your CPU 100% you can probably get away with 600RPM. I wouldn't go any lower though.
