I am planning to replace the motherboard in my 5 year-old rack-mounted PC which I use as an audio workstation. I have decided on an Intel i7 920 with an Asus P6T SE motherboard (which I hope will give me another 4-5 years of use) but need to ensure it runs quietly. Because of the rack-mounted format, the PC only has about 14cm of headroom between the current motherboard and the casing. I don't know how much this will be reduced by the CPU height above the new motherboard.
I've been through the recommended heatsinks list and cannot find any that fit the 1366 socket that will fit in the space available except the Scythe Kabuto - but this is a down-blowing fan and I'm concerned that there will be insufficient space above the fan to provide adequate airflow.
Looking around I have found some heatsinks with side-mounted fans which claim to be quiet (eg, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, Scythe Shuriken Big Quiet CPU Cooler) but I wondered if anyone here would have comments on these or on alternative recommendations that would fit the constraints I have?
Thanks.

i7 860 looks good - but heatsink now harder to find
Yes - I like the idea of the 860 as it seems equivalent to the processing power of the 920 but runs much cooler and consumes less power. However, now the choice of heatsinks in the recommended list shrinks to zero as there seem to be fewer for the 1156 socket.

Anyone have any experience of a quiet cooling solution suitable for an i7 860 in a P55/1156 socket board? I can't find any on the recommended list.

Have you looked here.
The Scythe Kabuto is listed as are several other good coolers for 1156 socket. You don't have too many options in a rack mount case.
