I now use a mugen 2 to cool a X2-6400 (125 watt TDP) and control speed with speed fan.
In a silent room at 25 °C :
i get a around 31 °C idle temp with 450 rpm (NO noise... it is the minimal speed to get it spinning reliably...)
it stay like this (bellow 45 °C) except during gaming and video encoding.
when temps ramp up above 45 °C (gaming) it spin at 800 rpm. it is then making noise but nothing compared to the stock fan: I have to switch off the game sound to hear it !)
during intensive use (CPU intensive game/encoding - 80-100% load on both core) the temp get up above 50 °C the fan spin full speed and then it make noise but hear again I have to witch off the game sound to hear it !)
the max temp I get is 52 °C
overall in a similar scenario I get 8 °C less than with the stock fan.
In summary it is extremely effective and silent.
best
it is a good cooler - mugen 2

(Mine starts reliably at 350rpm using motherboard pwm control)

Just thought it'd be nice to link to the review here http://www.silentpcreview.com/scythe-mugen2
the X2-6400 was the best bang for the buck (80 euros) when I bought It two years ago (before the new X2 and the athlon II). I only use my system for gaming so to fit in my budget I stick to dual core as I feel that only few (any?) games take advantage of more.wouterr5 wrote:Wow, a 125 Watt dualcore
Looks like you took the right measures to silence it though
Just wondering, are you using PWM or voltage for controlling the speed of the fan? If you use PWM, you should be able to get the fan down to 300 RPM.
regarding your question about the way fan speed is controlled I do not now... maybe this will help :
In the Bios the fan speed control is set to PWM but I do not activate ASUS Q-Fan because I do not like its ON/OFF behaviour. I use in speed fan and in there the CPU fan control (PWM2) set to software control.
I am very happy with this system now It perform very well. and it is very quiet (thanks to the suggestion I found on spcr and its forum...). My upgrade would be a HD5850 but it is still too expensive and also I might have to change the power supply. I think I will stick to that for now. the only thing might be the replacing soon is the tricool fan for something quieter.
