CPU, GPU noise?

Post by quietlife » Mon Nov 08, 2010 5:58 am

Hi, I started a post on my system here:

http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=74203

I haven't resolved the problem.

Perhaps someone here could have a scan through and see if there's anything I've missed, or any of the other posters.

In particular, as I mentioned a couple of times in the post, the system would occasionally go into a 'very quiet' mode automatically (I think I could only hear the PSU fan), but I haven't since been able to get the system to go back into that mode.

Oops, just put it in. It's on another website - I hope that isn't a problem.

According to the screenshot, your CPU fan is running at 2000 rpm... At idle, it should be well below that :) But, from the SPCR review of the AMD stock fans and my personal experience, it'll probably not go any lower than that.
You could try to remove the stock AMD fan, and hang the Nexus PWM fan on the CPU heatsink with clothing elastic like this:

If that proves to be unsatisfactory, you're probably best off buying a better CPU heatsink, like a CM Hyper 212+.
While you're at it, mount the HDD this way as well, it will make your PC a lot quieter as well.

Oh right, so the rubber bungee absorbs the noise of the spinning? Good idea.

The elastic doesn't absorb any noise, it just prevents vibrations from transferring to the case. There's a massive thread in the drives section of the forum detailing how people implemented drive suspension in their own computers.

OK, I suspended the HDD in my system and it didn't make any difference to the noise level. I won't change it back yet though as it must make some difference.

The majority of the noise comes from my CPU fan and then the GPU fan. I disconnected the CPU fan and it was considerably quieter although the CPU temp went up to 55 (from 30) and so I didn't leave it running for long.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get to is that even if I buy an aftermarket cooler, I'm not convinced it will make much difference to the noise levels: system running normally with email, browser, chat, Iplayer:

TBH, having spent considerable time and money building a quiet machine, I'm disappointed by the overall result. I think what I really need is a higher spec laptop as even basic laptops are far quieter than quiet PCs. So, an £800 laptop should match a £600 desktop, but it'd be much quieter IMO. Storage and screens can be dealt with externally.
