Will SLK-800U fit on these?

Post by karmasalad » Sat Jul 26, 2003 2:46 pm

I'd like to get the SLK800-U for a couple of new machines. I've never worked with this HSF before though, so I'm not sure if it'll fit on the motherboards I'm planning on using.

They are (link to Newegg images):
Intel D845GERG2LK
Intel D845GEBV2L
Shuttle AN35N

There's also a PDF file at Intel's site that contains a nice close-up of the socket area for those first two mobos. (Note: It's a big download.)

I think the Shuttle should have no problems, but the capacitors on the Intel boards look like they could get in the way.

Can anybody with experience using the SLK800 tell me whether or not they think the HSF will fit on the above mobos? Better yet, if somebody is actually using the same combo, please let me know. :)

Thanks!

So far, we have not found any boards not compatible with SLK-800. If you've found any, we would appreciate if you could report them to here.

But that's for the SLK-800A, isn't it? He's talking about the SLK-800U.

The SLK800-U is not really that big; its base is quite narrow. It should fit on 99% of P4 boards without any problem.

The only difference between the 800A and the 800U is the mounting plate at the base for mounting the 800U into the stock P4 plastic retention frame. All of that stuff fits well within the confines of the plastic retention frame and is nowhere near in danger of touching any of the components on the board. The only possible area of interference would be up near the top where the fins on the 800U taper out but this seems to be high enough above the board to clear all the components.

karmasalad - I've only put an SLK800U on one P4 board, an Asus P4B-266 but that board has a row of caps just outboard of the retention bracket like the Intel boards you're using and it cleared fine.

If you're really worried about it you could always use an Alpha 8942 heatsink. They're about 95% as effective as the SLK800 and there are absolutely no clearance issues with them as they are "straight-up-and-down" and do not protrude outside the boundary of the stock P4 retention bracket. I think they're cheaper than the SLK800's too.

I'm running an Alpha 8942 + 12V L1A on my P4 2.66 that's OCed to 3.0GHz. It cools very well. Load temp never goes higher that low 50°C range, even during very hot weather. I could probably run the fan at 7V if I wanted to push it.
