I made a huge mistake
I bought the Scythe Kotetsu, but the fan is 2cm taller than the width of the case for it to properly fit!
Unbelievable, I waited a week for it to get delivered and now it's just money in the wind...
Is there a shorter CPU fan equally good in terms of cooling and silence?
Btw, the case is normal ATX midtower - Zalman Z3.

is 155mm tall (vs. Kotetsu's 160mm). It slightly outperforms Kotetsu, so if the weight (which isn't terrible, but still heavier than Kotetsu) and width/depth (MUCH fatter than Kotetsu) aren't problems, that would be my pick.

Fun with math: 5mm < 2cmKen5d wrote:Scythe's Ninja 4: ...is 155mm tall (vs. Kotetsu's 160mm). I
140mm tall or less coolers...puts you into 92mm fanned towers or a horizontal cooler. There's the Noctua NH-U9S and NH-D9L and Thermalright Macho 90. The Thermalright is the best of the three.

Yes, math has always been one of my strengths.CA_Steve wrote:Fun with math: 5mm < 2cmKen5d wrote:Scythe's Ninja 4: ...is 155mm tall (vs. Kotetsu's 160mm). I
Obviously I didn't read that closely, and thought it was 2mm, not 2cm. Thanks for the correction, Steve.

I don't think Thermalright Macho 90 exists in European stores..

Are you talking about THERMALRIGHT Macho Rev.B?
Macho 90 can't be found in any aggregate sites I regularly use to find price differences.

You could also go with a higher end top down cooler. I don't remember what CPU / mobo/case you have...so this is just a list. Determine the compatibility. Noctua NH-C14S, NH-C12P SE14 if you can find it, and the NH-L12 if it's a lower TDP CPU.

What about SCYTHE Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B?

You could take a look at the BeQuiet TopFlow SR1 as an alternative if you want to give yourself plenty of clearance. 100mm heatsink with a 25mm (Silent Wings 135Mm) fan.

Again, I don't know what your CPU is. If it's a lower TDP one, sure. You can use the Big Shuriken. I'd advise replacing the thin-line fan with a standard 25mm thick one.Stratohero wrote:What about SCYTHE Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B?
Re: I made a huge mistake
Stratohero, Have you tried to put the cover on? I've had this kind of problem a couple of times myself. But I was luck and was able to "force" the cover onto case. Not sure if it will work for you but ...
Just for what it's worth;
With top down coolers I've found that usually turning the fan over so it is bottom up instead of top down lowers CPU temps. I contribute this to top down hits motherboard, turns out, hits RAM, GPU, etc. turn up past cooler and fan draws this already heated air back into cooler along with other air.
I normally monitor cooler intake air temp and commonly see 5-8c difference on an open test bench test station.

Should I get be quiet! Shadow Rock TopFlow SR1?
Basically, up to 140mm height would be fine.
