Happy 10th Anniversary to Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja!

Post by kater » Thu Apr 14, 2016 11:47 pm

I've had this magnificent piece of hrdwr for exactly 10 years now. I remember I bought it sometime in spring '06, shortly before the second revision hit the stores - the guy even offered a small discount as he was making space for the new coolers. It barely fit in my case then, a generic Modecom something. I changed the original fan to a Slipstream, but still have somewhere. I have no plans to retire it any time soon - I5 2400 is still plenty for my needs, and even if I'll want to upgrade it someday, the new mid-range CPUs will surely be even easier to cool. They'll have to completely change the socket to make me abandon it :E

Also, I'm still rocking P150, bought it in autumn 2006. Changed the original PSU for a Seasonic S12 shortly after, as I didn't want to fanswap it (S12 was somehow quieter, and the Antec PSU sold for good money). I had to import the P150 from France as at that time Antec's presence in Poland was unimpressive. The P150 will soon be replaced with a modern black case, but it prooved a great case (well, apart from the buttons).

So what's the oldest piece you have in your main PC?

Congrats!

Did you ever note any reduction in its cooling prowess, along these years?

I can't answer it, honestly. I just didn't record the temps all along. The CPU now idles at around 34 C, with the fan at < 700 RPM and 21 C in my room. That said I don't think there was any degradation - the heatpipes are intact, the base is perhaps somewhat discolored from repeated use of various cleaning agents, but all in all it works great.

As long as it doesn't rust I think it just shoul chug along, right? 10 years is a lot for electronics, but for a hunk of metal kept in dry, warm place?

I can't help, I was just curious so I asked, mainly because some people said that the heatsinks with punched fins (like Scythes, the vast majority) degrade over time.

This topic was actually sparked when I was browsing the local auction site, where I spotted a Ninja modded to fit on 1155. Being a no-life nerd I emailed the guy and it turned out he actually followed my original topic published here :) What a warm feeling!

All of the heatsinks in my household are Ninjas. The HTPC is using mini Ninja and I'm pretty sure that I even have the original Ninja1 still in use in house somewhere. They have always exceeded my expectations. Scythe did screw up a little with pushpins on Ninja2, but I easily fixed it by buying Noctua backplate and bolting the heatsink through the motherboard. Problem solved. Ninjas forevah!

I still regret selling my Ninja. It served me well for a long time and I love the fin spacing. I still have my Ninja Mini, but it's not in use at the moment.
