Pentium M processors out!
Following on from a previous thread regarding the release of Pentiium M CPUs from Intel I just noticed that Ebuyer now have them on their website for sale.
Prices are:
Intel Pentium M CPU 1.5Ghz - £210.74 ex VAT
Intel Pentium M CPU 1.6Ghz - £299.00 ex VAT
Intel Pentium M CPU 1.7Ghz - £446.10 ex VAT (ouch!)
Check 'em out here.
For the price/performance ratio you obviously cant beat the trusty athlon but I guess for someone who wants silence at any cost, the P-M may be the way to go.
Given time I'm sure these things will drop in price but by then I guess the Pentium-M mkII will be out

It's cool that they're available (especially in the UK!)..
On their site I also found a Mobile P4 2GHz for 161 gbp inv VAT.. there was a review for it which had a link to this:

There's guys over at Anandtech and Bleeding Edge forums that have been putting these P4-M's on regular S478 boards for the past 9+ months. They work fine. The CPU's have been available here in the US from Newegg and Mwave since the beginning of the year.
Here's an SPCR thread about this, and there's more if you want to search.
What Smokeey's referring to are the newer "Banias" CPU's which are kind of an amalgam of the best features of the PIII-S CPUs and the P4 NW CPUs. Desktop MoBo support for these CPUs is very, very spotty however.
It would mean it'll fit, if it was actually a S478.. if you shearch for the Mfr Part # (BXM80535GC1600E) at intel.com you will find this.. and unfortunately it says it is a Micro-FCPGA... I think this is a mPGA479M rather than a S478.Smokeey wrote:According to the Ebuyer website it says that these Pentium M CPUs are 'Skt 478' - does that mean that these puppies will fit in a standard P4 motherboard?
Here's hoping...
The EBuyer page is wrong I think. Bummer.

look how fast these things go! Scroll down and you'll see some charts comparing Pentium M, Tualatin, P4, and C3.

yeah, the Israel team who designed it made a LOT of changes. It's so efficient that hyper threading wouldn't even help much. I believe there are a few similarities with the P4, a good bit more with the PIII, but the vast majority is new. It's supposedly so "advanced" that certain improvements haven't even been patented. There's a bunch written on it. Wish there were some **** desktop boards .
I don't like the whole Centrino thing with the wireless networking... seems like an easy security breech to me.
My question is what type of heatsink will fit. Will it be a P4 type or a clip on type?
