Best Athlon for underclocking..?

Post by Boho » Thu Dec 25, 2003 8:34 am

aaargh, this seems to be one question Google can't answer...

I am looking for the Athlon-core that will give the lowest heat dissipation at a speed of something like 1400+ (my mobo can go down to 1.1v Vcore).

Would the barton be best suited for this, or the Thoroughbreds..? Do the TbredA's and TbredB's underclock in the same way..? Would I be best off with say a 2700+ or a 1700+..?

I would say that the Barton core would be best for you. Do note that if you get a new processor today you will get a multiplier locked version.
The downside is that you would pay a lot to get a 1400+ if you buy a Barton core.

Its hard to say, but I would be inclined to recommend a Thoroughbred B core. The manufacturing process for the last batches is excellent. These chips are great... I'm running about 300mhz faster than stock with the Vcore set .2V below stock.. that's pretty decent if you ask me.

Also, something you have to take into consideration is that you will reach a point where any further drops in clock speed and Vcore are purely academic, they will produce no lower noise level from your HSF. That's the level I'm at right now, the CPU fan stays inaudible even after 9 hours of 100% load.

The thoroughbreds are probably the best because one, most are 1.5vcore compared to the 1.65 of the bartons and two, the cache/extra transistors of the bartons will generate alot of heat. I had my old 1700+ Tbred up to 2.0Ghz at stock voltage and maximum 40degC with a 92mm panaflow and thermalright ax7. I'm sure it would undervolt/underclock just as well. My new system (away from it right now as I am on holidays) is a barton 2500+ and the initial stages of testing allowed me to get to 2.0GHz (from 1.83) and undervolting it to 1.6vcore. Haven't played around with it enough to give you more info yet, sorry. When I get back home in about a week I will keep trying to see what the best cooling/overclocking/undervolting I can get from it.

Cheers,
Andy

My XP1800+ TBred B (default vcore = 1.6v) runs at 2000+ 1.35v.

I can underclock it to 666Mhz, 1.1v and run passive with a decent HS and minimal case airflow (L1A @5v in te PSU as the only fan in the system).

Are the new AMD Athlon 64 chips good for undervolting with their new Cool N' Quiet feature?

My thoroughbred B 1700+ JIUHB 0312 can do 1.2ghz on 1.1vcore, which creates about 15 watts of heat or less, almost passively coolable! It needs 1.35v to do 2000+ (1.67ghz) just like kostik's Tbred B.

Woah, thanks for all the replies!

It sounds like you have had great luck with the Tbred B's! Undervolting AND overclocking, that's cool... Is it a coinscidence that you are all using the 1700+ or the 1800+, or are similar results just not attainable with the higher-speed Tbreds? Nothing below 2200+ can be found here in Sweden AFAIK.

You probably want to look for used processors.
The best place in Sweden is sweclockers.com.
Here is the link to the market for used processors.
Example XP2400+ cost 650 SEK.
Lots of good stuff to be found there.

Does anyone know how to measure the total wattage draw from a system based upon the current traveling into the PSU (i.e. from the wall socket to the back of the PSU)?

Simple way: Kill-a-Watt. just do a google search.
