Searched, but no clear answer - NF7-S, Antec, and HS/Fan
Okay,
I've done some searching, but not found the answer I think.
I am going to be getting an Antec Sonata case, NF7-S board, and a 2500+.
What is the best, quietest HS/Fan for this board that will fit in the case?
It looks like the Thermalteke SLK won't, and it seems to be the one of the most popular.
Can anyone suggest a good HS/Fan combo? How about the Zalman CNPS 3100+
TIA

Welcome to SPCR, Agent Cooper!
I'm pretty sure the thermalright slk900a will fit your nf7.
also, the zalman 7000a will also fit, although yuo'll need to do a little bit of modification to the clip, and there'll only be about 5mm between the hsf and the power supply.
if you're willing to modify the clip, get the zalman 7000a. otherwise, look towards something like the thermalright slk900a w/ panaflo 92L.

Thanks chylld,
I found the compatibility on the thermalright site for the 900A.
For the Zalman, their website states that it is not compatible with the NF7.
I will look into the 900A.
All I'm really interested in for now is going from 2500 to 3200 if possible with the FSB, and that will likely be it.
Perhaps I don't need something as good as the 900A?
Of course, if that's the only way to get a good silent combo, then that is what I will do.

Hello Agent Cooper,
Yes the 7000A will fit the nf7-s but you not only have to cut the clip as chylld says but also reverse the supports that hold the clip onto the MB which is against Zalman's directions. It does work though as that is what I use with my nf7-s. Unfortunately I am not familiar with that case so do not know if it will fit. The 7000A is about 5-10mm higher than the MB so if the PSU gives enough clearance than you should be ok. Good luck.

I use the Aero Cool Deep Impact DP-102 on my NF7-M (exactly same board at and near CPU as the NF7-S). So it is sure to fit your board and in you chassi as well. The choise of fan is up to you, depending on the cooling capacity/noise level tradeoff you want.
You can use it with one of two 80mm fans, but I would recommend using a single fan, since that will be enough.
If you overclock to XP3200 my guess is that you need an L1A at about 9V or so.

I got my DP-102 from a Swedish store in Stockholm. www.mycom.se
I mounted a 24V M1A Panaflo on it, but currently I have the Panaflo disconnected. It cools my CPU fine without any CPU-fan.

P.s. Just realised that this is post 500 for me in this forum.

I have a Sonata ... NF7-S V2 ... and a Barton 2500+ and use the Thermaltake Silentboost ... I find it to be quiet and a decent cooler. I typically run at slightly OC'd settings and heat dissipation has not been an issue. The loudest thing in my case now is the old Radeon 7200 fan that is going bad .. this will get replaced sooner or later.
Have you modded your Sonata at all?

Do you think you could measure exactly how much higher than the motherboard? 5-10mm is a big range.... I would greatly appreciate knowing this. I really want the Zalman over a Thermalright solution since they seem to perform better according to MikeC's review.Andytom wrote: Yes the 7000A will fit the nf7-s but you not only have to cut the clip as chylld says but also reverse the supports that hold the clip onto the MB which is against Zalman's directions. an SLK-800A (sorry not a 900) overhangs the edge of the nf7-s v2.0 by about 1mm.
