120mm Fan dilemma

Post by dmo » Wed Jul 20, 2005 12:06 am

Ok, so I definitely would like quiet fans, and I know Panaflos used to rock. Reading around I found that Yate Loons and Nexuses will own. However, I don't want a super quiet system. I want a system that's quiet, but not like whisper quiet. You know 30 dB can work for me and what not.

My idea was to buy a high speed (105 CFM?) Panaflo for my XP-120 and then attach to fan controller and then drop it down to whatever's nice. Same with my case.

I dont know what a L1A Panaflo sounds like, so I'd rather not take a risk of getting a super slow fan that I would like to go faster. Thus, the fan controller way is the best.

So with Yate Loons, I see only the slow ones out, but on their website they have some that run up to 92 CFM.

Any recommendations? Where can I get these Yate Loons, and moreover, what's the best solution for me? (BTW I will be getting a P-160, so I need an additional 120mm fan + fan for my XP-120). Thanks!

The problem with that is you can only lower the voltage so far before the fan will no longer operate, in most cases to about half of the normal max speed/cfm and 50cfm is about the max you should really ever should need.

If the fan is not designed to be quiet it may not run quiet or pleasingly at any speed. I had a Thermaltake 120mm SMART fan and only at the lowest speed was it usable. At all other speeds, even undervolted it growled annoyingly.

What about Papst fans? They scale well with voltage right? Where can I get those?

dmo, why do you think you need a very high CFM fan? Reading your posts I don't see you mentioning a need for overclocking or anything, so unless your goal is to push your system to the limit a L1A 120mm Panaflo is probably going to be more than enough at full speed, since it's rated at 69 CFM. It is not by any means a "super slow" fan. I think you may be able to get away with much less (like a Nexus) since you're using a very effective cooler such as the XP-120, but double check this by running some searches on this combo.

well tekgems have the medium speed yate loons... and undervolted they are as quiet as anything out there.. but still can be pushed for maximum air when needed

check them out

specs from yate loon website
D12SM-12 = 120x120x25 = 1650rpms = 70.5cfm = 33dba(at full rpm)

http://tekgems.com/Products/et-13714-fan-d12sm-12.htm

tekgems also carry the slower more quiet version, orange yate loons

I've got a high speed 120mm Panaflo on my XP-120 and I run it at 5V. It's inaudible from inside my closed case and my temps for CPU are still good, 100% load from CPU Burn-In and temp don't breach 44°C. I'm running a 2.4C @ 3.0GHz though, so it's not exactly the hottest CPU around.

The Panaflo I'm using is a Japan model btw and it's rated for about 105CFM IIRC.
