Largest 12v fan that I could buy online right now?

Id love something like a 200mm fan :D but guessing the largest is a 172mm or 140mm. But I cant find those anywhere. Other thing I want is it to be thin and quiet. Like the 140mm ones used in the quiet power supplies.

Does anyone know where to get Just the fan?

Digikey sells 172mm papst 6424 fans (page 1298). They're 172x51mm, with 241CFM@57dBa. It's a 24volt fan, but you could probably run it at 12v.

It's also $82.29. :wink:

Thanks but I really need a thin fan =) Not to mention even at 12v Im sure that thing is far from quiet =) Looks like IM stuck with low speed 120x25mm fans, kind of disappointing =(

I have a 8" x 10" very low restriction heatsink I am cooling with two 92mm fans. Want to just replace them with one large thin one. They are both really quiet. But Im playing with ideas on how to make it look more pleasing. I just think one large fan would look better than two small ones. Plus Im sure it would move more air.

I have one of the Papst 6224 24v fans from all electronics. It is NOT quiet, even when undervolted as slow as it will go. If you want quiet you'll either need to use something like the Nexus 120x25 fans, or the Globe 120x25 (somewhat noisier at all speeds, but flows a lot more air at 12V if you need it).
Or use a 120/240 VAC fan of whatever size you want and undervolt it. Get a fan with a sleeve bearing, not ballbearings, or you will have considerably more bearing noise.

BTW the info on the Papst 6224 /2H is incorrect on the All Electronics site, it's a 280CFM fan.

A few questions:
Is looks more important than quiet operation?
Are you willing to put out around $100+ on a solution that might not work out to your satisfaction?
Have you calculated how many CFM you need for adequate cooling?

Basicly you have 3 options:
1 single large DC fan fairly untested.
1 single large AC fan that is somewhat tested.
Several smaller DC fans that we have lots of knowledge about.

We have seen in earlier comparisons that depending on your need for CFM the quietest cooling solution can vary between fan sizes.

Jegs has 10" 12v radiator fans. They run fine at 5v. At 5v the whoosh is pleasant, but since it has real bearings, it does click.

Looks matter not at all. Its thrown in a corner never to be seen. Not willing to spend 100$ even if it was a known working solution. The 92s cool it fine but wouldnt mind something quieter and easier to mount.

When I said a single fan would look better than a 92 I gave the wrong impression, I applogize. I just dont want like a huge blower blowing done on it.

I was just hoping someone knew where to buy a quiet 140mm fan.

The 92s that are blowing right now are the panaflo. So Im maybe moving 50cfm max.

OK, now that it's clear what you want to do, I recommend 2 120mm fans. The Nexus would be my choice, but if $$ is important, the cheaper Globe fan is a decent second choice. Both are quieter than the Panaflo 92 at probably >50% (or greater) airflow.

Good call on that, I was about to suggest a small radiator fan.

You guys are gonna hate me =) 2 120s wouldnt fit unless I made some sort of duct which would increase the size. I dont want the upgrade to add 3-4 inches in height.

The fins go length wise. So putting 2 120s directly on the heatsink would only cool the fins that are between those 120mms. How I have the 92s right now they cool the majority of fins, like 4-5 are neglected. have 120s next to each other they would neglect like 20 fins. So Id be hitting a lot less surface area.

Im thinkni sticking with the 2 92s is the best I'll get now...
