120mm Akasa Ultra Quiet Ak-183-L2B

Post by wiFFy » Sat Oct 30, 2004 3:59 pm

The specs(18db, 44.8cfm) look impressive atleast to me, but does anyone have experience how this fan perfoms in real life?
For example compared to Nexus 120mm Real Silent case fan 22.8 dB - 36.87 CFM, this akasa looks great.

-EDIT:
Small lookup on 120mm and 80mm models, no real testing done. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... m=75&num=1
Again no testing against other fans or comments on the noise level. http://www.techniz.co.uk/modules.php?na ... ent&id=113

Hmmm not too sure, sounds too good to be true... cant believe what people say about their numbers unless you can test and verify. For instance, the nexus 120 mm:

1000 RPM (1050 RPM for me under speedfan)
22.8 dBA
36,87 CFM

akasa 120mm

1400RPM
18.9 dBA
44.8 CFM

There are a few scenarios:

1. Akasa is correct and nexus is correct

2 (a). Akasa is correct and nexus is incorrect so based on Akasa's truth, Akasa is correct
2 (b). Akasa is incorrect and nexus is correct so based on Nexus' truth, Nexus is correct

3. Akasa is incorrect and nexus is incorrect.

Well what does that gibberish really mean?? Does having correct data means a brand's fan is actually "better"? one thing i picked up from this site is... dont trust the numbers. Time for some more silly logic games!

1. Akasa is correct and nexus is correct, therefore both fans have some sort of different structure or magic part to have different attribute!

2. (a). Akasa is correct and nexus is incorrect, since we can not evaluate any numbers from nexus' side, Akasa is better
2. (a) (i) Akasa is correct and nexus is incorrect, but somehow, Nexus is better (barely happens, very very rare because if a product is good, they will advertise it even more)

2.(b) and 2.(b) (i) : similar to above but for nexus side.

3. Both sides are selling us snake oil and playing the numbers game, so do a side by side comparison (thanks SPCR!)

Every company has a marketing department, and we even have marketers here in this board :) Whether it is cars, computers, home-audio, diet pills, or lots of other things, we want to believe in a one-trick no-hassle product because it is easy to believe. Sadly, marketers know that and sell that to us. Not necessarily their fault, just us consumers willing to buy it.

For me, I believe nexus because they do deliver a good solid product and I can verify the RPM so its CFM and dBA do not seem to be way out of place. loose logic I know... bad hunch of mine but I hope it wont be dangerous :)

I came across an Akasa about 6months ago, though it was a different, 80mm model. I found it both louder and moved a lot less airflow then I thought it would based on the specs. (Compared specs with Japanaflo 80mm).

If you want a transparent fan, I would recommend the AcoustiFan AF120CT (see sticky 120mm fans thread).

Do you mean Akasa? Or is there actually a brand called Alaska?

MikeC posted the preliminary results for the Nexus. 23 dB(A)/1m @ 12V.

Those Akasa fans are measured (most likely :D) from another room. Or with no blades, just the hub.

Another favourable review here.

Edit 1: Oops! You've already mentioned that review.

Edt 2: Custom PC (UK mag) gave them a quick mention this month: “Both 80mm and 120mm variants provide a good amount of airflow without any undue noise...”. They marked them overal at 4 out of 5.

I would entirely agree with DrC's first opinion. The 2 80mm Akasa's I fitted 18mos ago tend to whir & don't shift much air. I only turn them up in emergencies. Their claim for mine (20.05dB) at quitest was fictional & dissapointing.

I'd take their figures with a pinch of salt & guess the only way your ever going to know is by actually buying one.

Best of luck!
