i've done a fair amount of reading on when to place fans in the front and when to use them in the rear but i wanted more. are there any articles/reviews on this topic on this site? thanks.

Best way to find out is to try the different placments.
Normally if you're using 1 fan it will be rear exhaust

Best place is in the rear. Negative air pressure will allow cool air to be sucked into the case. An exhaust is far more important than intake.
