7700alcu...very dissapointed

Post by johnnq » Thu Jan 05, 2006 7:34 pm

well now i have the following in my p180:
2x 120 tricool fans on low
1x 92 nexus at 12v
vf700cu at 5v
seasonic430
ZALMAN 7700ALCU.....

well i decided that my tricool fans were the source of my noise, but i opened the case anyway. to my suprise, the zalman was making ALL of the noise. even with the computer off, i can spin the fan and hear bearing noise (is this normal?). depending on the temps in my room, i idle around 35-40 and load at 45-50 with the fan on high (using the fan mate). i'm dissapointed that this fan has poor temperature and silence levels. if i could do it all over again i would get an xp90 or an xp120 with a yate loon or panaflo... this is just a warning. zalman is a very respectable company, but i was shocked by the noise of the 7700.

oh yea the nexus is 100% silent inside the case at 12v :) at least i did something right.

The 7700 is known for having a loud ball-bearing fan. You'll need to swap it for something quieter.

The 7700 should be setup to run at its lowest speed with the fan mate controller. Mine is completely inaudible with the side cover on the case at this speed. And my CPU temps never get out of the 40C range even running two instances of Prime 95.

After much testing I found that temps with the fan at lowest setting were within a couple degrees of its highest as well. You could swap the fan out for a quieter one, but chances are it would mainly be quieter because it running SLOWER and moving less air anyways.
