Tri-Cool Fans in the P180

Post by DanW » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:36 pm

How quiet are these fans when on low and does they shift enough CFM? I've got a fan controller that will undervolt them to 6v, or is this unnessicary?

Thanks,
Dan

They're OK on low, not great, but OK. CFM is also okay, but won't be enough to cool a Pentium D or anything. The switch that they come with probably already runs them at 6V on the lowest setting, so an external fan controller is unnecessary. (any less than 6V and they probably won't start).

Cool, I think I'll leave them in the case for a bit and see how they fair then...

Trying to find a Nexus like fan over in the UK is a bit of a pain in the bum. I've got 5 Akasa amber fans that they say are 18db, but I'm sure they're not. But I've probably been bitten by the silence bug

You can get the real deal over at KustomPCs... Or do you want something cheaper?

at £12 they're only £2 deerer than the Akasa fans I was going to get.

They say they're 22.8db? I thought they were supposed to be quiet? Or are they the best when undervolted? I know the Akasa make a weird noise when undervolted. I'm presuming the 80mm fans have the same type of motor as the 80mm ones?

In my personal experience the Akasa Amber fans are awful, noise-wise; they have double ball bearings, which are always noisier than sleeve bearing fans (like the Nexus).

If you want a cheaper alternative to the Nexus, try the 120mm Yate Loon (which is all the Nexus is underneath the label), available from Silencio (an SPCR member) on Ebay:

Silencio's Ebay shop

Under a tenner incl. delivery.

The thing with Nexus is that they give you a realistic db figure unlike others (SilentX for example!). 22.8db isn't loud for a fan really. They are meant to undervolt very well (probably why people round here love them so much!).

I totally agree. When you consider that most people's ambient noise is probably more than 30dB, it's actually an excellent performance.
