2 fans in series?

Post by n604 » Sun Nov 12, 2006 6:48 am

I heard if i connect 2 fans in series to a 12v plug, both of them will get 6 volts each.

Whats the easiest way to connect them in series?

thanks for the link.

i notice this guy using the zalman multi connector.

first he shows the fans connected parallel at 5v each.

then after the cable modification he has them connected in series where they get 6v each.

whats better? parallel at 5v OR series at 6v?

I have asked exact same question a while ago.
My experiment is not so successful. Yes, it provide 6v for each fan but the fan "resistance" vary by their speed. It doesn't seem so stable (start up) on my last try (2 80mm Panaflo).
Search thread start by me under this forum. You probably find it fast.

  • Parallel at 5V is easier to get. Not all fans start at 5V.
  • In series at 6V blows a little more air.
It's not that one is always better than the other. It's which one fits best to your needs.

It's best to use two of the same fans for the series 6V thing. Or at least two that are rated for the same power draw. Otherwise one may get 7V for one and 4V for the other or something like that depending on the difference in load. I've used this before with two matching fans and it worked great.
