hot northbridge on Gigabyte 965P DS3 - silent fan option?

Post by 03flat4 » Tue May 01, 2007 8:36 am

If anyone here has overclocked a Giga 965P DS3, you would also have found that the northbridge heatsink, which has no fan, gets too hot if there is no fan near it such as a cpu fan helping to keep it cool, because I am water cooled. I got a small 60mm fan from frys and attached it, does the job but is LOUD. Is there a reliable quiet fan or fans anyone can suggest I get to attach to the heatsink? I do not want to replace the heatsink, just want a nice silent fan that will do the job. Thanks!!!

The more info you can provide the more complete answer you can get.

There's no reference point in your post. What company? What speed is the fan? How many amps does it use?

You understand a quieter fan will spin slower and not do the job as well, yes?

This is a slower speed 60mm fan, there are some others. If you go much slower than this then they do not move any air. And there is a possibility that even this fan will be too noisy.

I replaced the stock north bridge hs with this zalman nbf47 and use a quiet 80mm Panaflo to move air across it.

Good choice. I think TT (or was it thermalright?) have a heatpipe-based one as well which is interesting.

aristide1 : Yeah like I said in my post, the company of my mobo is Gigabyte and the board is a 965 DS3. As far as amps I have no idea..it just needs a low speed small fan to move air over the fins and I think it'll be sufficient. I might consider putting that panaflo fan on it..I think I can tolerate the 24dba it puts out.

mikellpp : I do have a zalman northbridge heatsink that I could replace it with, but I have decided instead to find a fan solution over the heatsink.

I currently have a fan that is 3800 rpm @ 28 dba..is that a huge difference compared to this 60mm panaflo?

The Panny is 3200 RPM and rated 24dBA. I wouldn't go crazy with the dBA numbers.

The easiest thing to do first would be to just run your current fan at 7 volts. That should be help significantly.

I don't bother with small attached fans like this, I'd rather put a large silent fan in the vicinity with one of these:

wow that thing is really neat. However, I have tried something similar by mounting a 120mm fan on the case wall pointing right at my northbridge...but because it is a larger fan pushing air that is diffuse, it does not concentate and hit the nortbridge with enough air, which is why i went to trying to use a small fan at a somewhat low RPM. I might do the 7Volt mod you talk about :)

OK. I have the DS3. Unfortunately, I haven't OC'ed anything yet. I do plan to in about a month though. But I can still tell you that the NB heatsink is HOT! Because the NB is so hot at stock speeds, OCing it (from 200MHz to 400+) made me a little nervous about cooling it. So I decided on getting Thermalright's HR-05. I also considered a Noctura NC-U6. I picked the HR-05 because it was cheaper. (I don't have this yet, but am planning on it.)

On my DS3 i need to up the voltage to the nb by 0.2 v in order to o/c so i definitely needed the extra cooling. Right now i run a stable 3 GHz with a E6400 cpu with reasonably low temps (about 28C idle to 38C load) with a Big Typhoon cpu cooler.

Hey for those of you that replaced the stock heatsink with an aftermarket one, did you find a heat pad underneath?

i replaced the nb fan on my gigabyte GA-7VA with a ZM-NB47J. the original fan/thin heat sink had a pad that came of really easy.
i have plenty of air flow as now everything is fitted within a Solo case.
cheers

my gigabyte965p -s3 northbridge is also running well hot at stock speeds (E4300).

the fact that the heatsink it is very hot too touch at least gives an indication that it is correctly seated and doing it's job

I see no reason to want to change the heatsink..... but i like the idea of adding an additional silent fan

I think finding a small fan that is quiet is difficult. Not to mention trying to find a way to mount it. I think that it would be easier and quieter (but slightly more expensive) to simply buy another heatsink, and run it passively. Even with no fan, and aftermarket heatsink greatly reduces temperatures.

Right now your best options are the Zalman NB 47 ones (block type and "flower" type) and the Thermalright HR-05. I've read that HR-05 is great even without a fan, but might be a little weak in the retention mechanism.
If anyone wants some screws, nuts, and washers to mount it, I'd be willing to send it out for $1 shipped because I'm getting a package of 50 each and I only need a few of them

Sorry, I didn't sepcify. I'm running the stock HS that came with my DS3. However, I do plan to buy a HR-05 soon.

u guys should try the nhp-2200 sold by some dope heads in the netherlands (nexus). Dunno what it does to a ds3, but my crashrock 939sli runs 4C above ambient with this thing (dual prime at 288fsb)
