Noisy JMC PWM

Post by ultrachrome » Wed May 02, 2007 8:31 am

I've been using a JMC 1225-12LB with a P5B Deluxe for a couple of months now. I have it soft-mounted with BIOS fan control on the lowest setting resulting in about 600rpm.

At first it was very quiet although I could hear a little rattling when I put my ear within 12 inches.

Over time the noise has gotten loud enough that I initially thought it was my hard drive seeking. It's starting to get annoying.

Anyone else having noise issues with their JMC PWM? Have any viable alternatives to JMC popped up in the last month or so?

I'm not feeling like spending another $20+shipping to replace. I'm considering installing a spare Nexus.

JMC doesn't make a 1225-12LB pwm (low speed ball bearing) fan. Their pwm (4 pin fans) are all high speed models. So do you really have a 4 pin fan, or just a regular 3 pin fan, and if so where did you buy it?

Anyway I've never had any problems with jmc fans - 3 or 4 pin.

I've been using a Arctic 12 PWM case fan for about 6 weeks. It's a bit quiter at idle than the "Low" setting on the Antec Tri-Cool fan that came with my case. Idle is usually between 600-700 RPM according to EasyTune5. Under a good load I've seen it speed up to over 1200RPM. At that load, it seems similar to the Tri-Cool on a medium setting in terms of noise. Keep in mind these aren't measurments, just my impressions.

I can't say it's significantly quieter than the Tri-Cool at similar settings, but it's nice to have it automatically adjust under motherboard control. Officially, the Arctic specs are 400-1500 RPM so the range may be greater than what I've observed. So far, no squeaks or rattles of any kind.

It's most definitely a 4-pin fan. Perhaps the part number was not correctly listed.

I ordered it from here: JMC 120mm 1225-12LB Pulse Width Modulated DC Fan

Yeah, you're right. I wonder were performance pcs got those as they are not on JMC's website. I've always bought mine from skyline graphics - the JMC distributor.
